I have a marshall stack at my house, and have had various marshall combos, but now Im buying a combo to keep at my friends house to use there.
I thought about another marshall but then I thought i might as well try something new!
Im considering either a Marshall AVT50, or a MG50. But can you guys recommend any other combos? Ive heard Line 6 or sumin are good... what could I get for around £200 - £300?

With that budget your best bet is going to be looking at what's available used. Line 6 fits that range but I've used a combo from them for a lot of stuff and they're not as versatile as you might think. They're definitely not a tweaker's amp.
When comparing wattage with price keep this in mind- 50 watts is not half the volume of 100 watts. 10 watts is half the volume of 100 watts, the difference in numbers is the number of distinguishable increments. If it's a good amp (by good I partially mean tube) you'll be able to get by with a 30 watt amp easily.

all you need is a Carvin Vintage 16 or a Blues junior

I'm not exactly sure how much that is for you, but I just got a Peavey Classic 50 2x12 for $700US and am in love with it. It has a little marshallness to it depending on how you set it. You could also get the Classic 30 1x12 for around $450US. Keep in mind those prices are new, so I'm sure you could get a great deal on them used. It's basically a 1 channel amp with a separate gain stage for what they call channel 2. All I did was set the clean channel to taste and then switched to the lead channel and adjusted the gain to taste and bam! awsome tone! It can cover pretty much any style you want especially G'N'R type overdrive. It probalby wouldn't quite cut it for metal, but that just depends on how you like your sound.

I would give a serious look to the Line 6 Spider II. 2x12 150 watts.
www.line6.com - click on products, then spider 212, then click hear it and watch the video.
I'm sure you'll fall in love like I did.
By the way it's $499.95 brand new at www.americanmusical.com

Pantallica,
why did you go with the line 6 versus the Vox Valvetronix or Fender Cyber series? I have the Vox and I tried the Line 6.. I felt I got better "fuller" tone out of the Vox....
but the line 6 I checked out was the Flextone III
thanks,
