I read the Hendrix vrs. Perry thread and agree with basics, Aerosmith is classic rock and Hendrix is more phsycodelic. That got me thinking the real question is who is better, Jimi Hendrix or Carlos Santana?

Well, I'm going against what I said in the Hendrix Perry thread to say one quick thing: I can't stand Santana.
Any guitarist can play blues licks over a spanish rhythm, I see nothing special about this so-called "genius." There is no one who is less of a "virtuoso" than this flagrantly over-rated, SLOW, feel-less guitarist (yes, feel-less is a word now).
Ok, I've had my two sentence rant. Feel free to say whatever you want, but try to remember that this man's "great accomplishment" was "Black Magic Woman." I've thought of better songs while taking dumps.

Yea Santana is way overrated, he has a lot of rubbish stuff in my opinion. 'Supernatural' is an ok album if you into that sorta stuff but how has is sold 100 million copies

First....NO MORE VS. THREADS
Second....IF THERE ARE GONNA BE VS. THREADS, AT LEAST MAKE THEM WORTH LOOKING AT
Third....DON'T EVER MENTION SANTANA IN YM PRESENCE AGAIN
Fourth....WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT IS DUMBLY(ITS A WORD TOO) EXPENSIVE RIG WHEN ALL HE DOES IS BEND NOTES
Santana is a nice player , but I don't see anything so special about him ... Hendrix is one of few most influencing guitarists of all time.

Hmm...if you're basing you're judgements on 'Supernatural' I suggest you check out the first half dozen albums to see why Santana, the band, were so good. I rate CS and far from what Jolly McJollyson said, one of his great strengths is his feel. So, he doesnt play at the speed of boring shred merchants. Who gives a ***k? He's also got an instantly recognisable tone, which in this day of anonymous metalheads is a major plus.

I don't hear any "feel" in Santana's playing. I think a lot of people confuse "playing slowly" and "bending lots of notes" with actual "feel". Check out Allan Holdsworth if you want to hear somebody who actually knows what he's doing...

What does "SLOW" have to do with it?
Black Magic Woman is a Peter Green song. Peter Green is greater than youll ever be.

Don't even try to bash Santana before you've heard Caravanserai.

alright guys, lay off Santana
no, he's not the fastest (Oh god no, aguitar player isn't good unless they're fast)
but he's got such a smooth classy way of playing and he has one of the sweetest, creamiest, warmest, nicest tones of anyone out there
and he's written some some really cool music
he's not trying to be anything he's not, just a spanishy jazzy ear pleasing guitar player

If by smooth, classy, and heartfelt you mean dry, repetitive, and feel-less, then yes, Santana is all of those. I say he is feel-less because his solos are all the same damn concept. Playing a spanish scale over a blues backing...whoopdy cock. "Feel" my ass, Santana can bend all the notes he wants, REAL feel is writing a solo that catches your ear, drawing you to the next note naturally with the appropriate musical devices. Santana has yet to write more than one solo, so I guess we can't technically rate him as anything but boring.

This is a FORUM, where people can discuss their interests.
You are the worst about this. You start a thread (I know, you didn't start this one) asking everyone's opinion, and then when they disagree with you, you start acting like an idiot about it.
So how about you read the posts, reply with your opinion, and if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Everyone has a right to read and respond to any message they wish, and if you want to start a site where only people with the same opinions as yours are allowed, then go do it. Otherwise, be quiet.
And in my opinion, Santana is good, not his mainstream stuff, but I still prefer Hendrix.

I'd agree if he hadn't been doing the SAME DAMN EXACT THING for thirty plus years straight.
I don't think he should be complimented for his guitar playing so much as figuring out that if he sticks to doing "this" guitar style, lots of people will buy it.

That's simply his opinion.
You slag off on people all the time, it's a forum, it's full of millions of different opinions. If you don't like it, ignore it.
You start threads based on your opinions to see how other people feel about the same topic. You're going to get a million different responses, and threads like these are pointless.
Comparing 2 guitarists, no matter who it is, is just nonsense.

Oh Jeez
All Im saying is whats the point in replying to a post to slag it off then contributing to it later on!?!? Thats what Telemaster did!
Your doing the same, saying thee posts are useless, well if you think that why read them and post on them! Stop cluttering them up with spam while others are just here to discuss the guitarists!

If you would've taken the time to read my post, I added my 2c on these two guitarists. I read them and post on them BECAUSE IT'S A FORUM, I CAN POST A REPLY TO ANY THREAD THAT I WANT. IT'S NOT YOUR SITE, NOR IS IT MINE.
How about if you don't like my reply, then don't read it?
And once again, off you go with your: "Oh you don't agree with me? You suck." attitude.
You don't discuss anything. You say: "Joe Perry is GOD. What? You don't believe me? Then don't respond to my thread."
That's just nonsense.

Pantallica1, before you reply again re-read this thread and the perry one I started, your way off the mark!
I never forced my opinions on anyone, and I always worded my views as an opinion, not gospel! Infact my tastes and opinions are often so strange Ive learned to accept others as they are probably more confounded lol!
All Im saying is that this thread and the 'perry' one were ruined by people slagging off the concept of the thread. If people object so strongly to vrs. threads why are they reading them and even replying to them?!
I just thought it was a bit hypocritcal when sum guy posted saying "This threads dumb etc".. "no more vrs threads", and then 5mins later he replies with his 2 cents!
This section is for bands and artists, how is it possible to talk about them without making comparisons, get real dood

have you ever listened to any of his live stuff? some of it is really nice
and "Playing a spanish scale over a blues backing" is a pretty interesting concept I think, sure it get's a little repetative, but thats his style
and on the topic of repetative guitarists, what guitarist isn't somewhat repetative? Jimmy Page, Toni Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, Yngwie, Zakk Wylde, Jason Becker, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson the list goes on....... It's called a style, I love all of these guitarists, but because of their style they get a little repetative
"REAL feel is writing a solo that catches your ear, drawing you to the next note naturally with the appropriate musical devices." so I guess by hiting one note after another starting from the root of the key, you will have feel, because that would be just hitting the next natural note
no, watch Santana play when he's in a groove, you will see he has more feel then he needs
don't get me wrong, Im not saying he's my favorite, not even close, but he's not bad and he's very ear pleasing, image sitting on the lawn with a beer and a big cheese burger on a cool summer's eve listening to Santana.. almost heaven
