Very cool album by the way.
Regarding the stunning solo spot, I recognise sections of the flight of the bumblebee (Rachmaninov) and an early King Crimson track but I wondered if anyone could tell me what Pettrucci's doing technically at 3:50 to 4 minutes and what the piece of music 6 minutes in is?
I guess that most of the rest of the piece is semi-improvised noodling, am I right?
I'd like to take the opportunity to recommend the track YTSE JAM (That's Majesty back to front, not some Myung inspired Japanese name), especially the studio version from when dream and day unite. I hate their pre James LaBrie singer but the playing on YTSE Jam includes some of the best bass and guitar play on record. The solo breaths fire and rips limbs off buffalo, I'm not easily impressed but it scares the **** out of me!

Myung is Chinese.

Btw, I saw DT live two days ago (my second time). I'll post a thread in the Famous Bands and Artists section. All I'll say for now is that it was unbelievable. LaBrie's voice problems and live performance issues are GONE. His live singing was flawless, and we're talking STUDIO QUALITY (as in Images and Words-era studio quality!). He stole the show.

Also, Petrucci has had some problems the past years when it comes to playing his solos live (he gives himself a hard time writing material like that), but for this tour and album he's practiced so intensely, his technique is now easily on level with that of Michael Angelo, and his right hand is one of the sickest in the business. His solos on Train of Thought are faster than ever, and he nailed EVERY NOTE of all his solos (new and old) for well over three hours (LONG show) while managing to look totally and utterly bored (looked very cool, but I just hope he isn't getting sick of his job).

I saw DT down in London a few weeks ago, and all i can say is just wow. i was totally blown away - they just sound totally amazing live (ive not been to one of their gigs before) and i hope that they go on for many years to come. My eyes were glued to Petrucci for most of the 3 hours but the others were just as good - Portnoy's drum solo was amazing and i agree - la Brie's voice was spot on. one of the best nights of my life to date ;)

lol, i remember them back in 92' when i was just a young whipper snapper. Didnt DT have an another singer before James?

I'm having a hard time finding that song.

yes indeed, it was his singing I hated. I didn't much like James's singing on Once in a Live time either but then I recognise that what he sings is very difficult and that he's a technically brilliant singer.

Charlie Dominici sang on When Dream and Day Unite (their debut). From Images & Words on, they had LaBrie.
