Hi all,

Wow, amazing site man. Some very useful stuff indeed. I will be checking it out in more detail when I have the time. Suffice to say, your progression builder script and the fretboard program are very innovative. Very informative!! :)

Cool Site. I actually saw it first on a different forum. One thing you should check in your theory section. On your modes you have both the lydian and phrygian modes as being the fifth mode of the major scale. The formulas are right but, it looks like you pasted it and just forget to edit that part.

That site is excellent. I've been looking for a decent site for chord and scale formulas for a long time. Just one question, is the pentatonic scale the pentatonic major or minor? Is there even a pentatonic major anyway? (New to the theory stuff)

1guitarfreak20 - regarding your question about the pentatonic scale. I think the real answer is minor, but this is a bit tricky because although the general rule of thumb for determining if a scale is major or minor is if the scale has a major or minor third. The pentatonic scale does have a flat 3rd but in some situations a using this scale over a major I, IV, V progression is acceptible.

So the best I can say is sometimes it acts like a major scale sometimes it acts like a minor scale.

When most people talk of major pentatonic they are talking about a mode of the pentatonic scale.

E ---1--3---------------------------------------------------

When most people talk of minor pentatonic they are talking about the first mode of the pentatonic scale.

D ------------------3--5---------------------------------------
A -----------3--5----------------------------------------------
E ----3--6-----------------------------------------------------

There is a good reason you a confussed by this, I am too. And it get more confussing too. Because although the two scale forms I show above look different they are in fact the same scale. If you were to play the chords F - Bb - C and use the scale about you would be playing a major pentatonic. If you use either of the scales above, over the chords Gm - Cm - Dm it would be a minor pentatonic. Ok I know this is a long explaination, but truth is I still have not answered the question completly. You see there are three pentatonic scales in every major key. So, you chould play chords from a given key and I would be able to play three pentatonic scales over it, each scale I could use will have a differnt function. Two of these functions would be minor, and one would be major. To truely understand this I would have to even deeper but I will leave it here. Hope this helped a little. SOMETIMES MAJOR SOMETIMES MINOR is the best I can do.

I'm a bit confused about the pentatonic scales as well.

The first thing I was taught in my lessons was the pentatonic. I've since quit lessons because of job interference, but I have been practicing four or five pentatonic scales.

From my research, what I was playing was the minor pentatonic. Are these five variations just the same scale in different places?

I apologize if this is the wrong place for this question, but I saw the pentatonic discussion and thought I'd throw it out there.

rockonn91 & Akira - The shirt shop is brand new I just put it up last week so I don't know how great the service is in the long run. I've sold two shirts so far (one to myself). It was really easy to do through the service I used and it was kind fun creating the products. If the owner of GT or anyone else for that matter wanted to do this it would be really easy I was able to setup the acount in 20 min and it costs no money out of pocket. pure - The tab archive is new too that went up about two weeks ago. I put off adding the archive for a long time but its becomeing extremely popular in the short time that its up there.

Fret spider - No there is no midi for the progression builder although most of the other apps do have midi out. You're right it could be a cool jam tool and I might add the Jam tool as a seperate application at a later date. This might be really cool if I made a simple drum machine to go with it. The problem with midi for it as a progression builder is I was afraid that if I were to add sound I might influence the progressions that a person would create. For example, if I were to play the example fast people might think that these progressions can only be played fast. If I played the examples as arpeggios some people might think that the chords had to be arpeggios. By giving just the chord name it is my intention to force the user to play there guitar while they are working with the tool and they will have no preconcieved ideas of what the progression should sould like. Thus helping them make their own music.
