I've seen it referred to but I've never heard this style of music before.
Anybody know?

My understanding of fusion is something like...a bunch of musical styles all got drunk at their office party and had a huge orgy... the net result was fusion. The bastard child of jazz.

Hmm, I guess it can best be described as a mix of Jazz and Rock, although I'm not too sure.

Pointless, mindless drivel that is basically everyone showing off all at once.
Or the greatest style of music ever invented.
Take your pick.

^^^ Its the second one.
Its like...
If you mix jazz (say, late 60s Miles Davis), with classical (classical training at least), with rock...
You got bands like Return To Forever, Weather Report, etc.
They rock your world, even if you haven't heard them yet.

I think that FUSION is a mesh of all genres. For sure, Rock, Blues and definately Jazz. I've notices over the years that a lot of great guitar players have turn to fusion to really show off their talents. Vernon Ried from
Livin' Colour, Jeff Beck, Neal Schon, Steve Lukather, Tony McAlpine... and many more.

Fusion is exactly that...fusion!
The combination of two or more genres... well thats its musical meaning anyway.
