View Full Version : Brian May (God)

Brian May is a God in my book. He's the reason I started to play guitar. His solos are so tuneful, he just widdle. He's admired by Vai and Satriani and 1million trillion other guitarist and other musicians.
I was wondering
1: Does anybody else like him on this site?
2: And why isn't he on the section with the Vai's and Satches?
Thanks for reading, Jim

I grew up listening to Queen and Mays unique sound. I really admire him as a guitarist.

I wonder if you got his autograph if you could sell it on E-Bay as God's autograph. The possibilities!
Is there another Brian May I (we) should know about... or were you trying to be funny?

No, Blacksteen just has his own opinon... god forbid. Not once in my post did I say I didn't like Brian May. I was just being sarcastic. I guess I'm going to have start putting a little note at the bottom of every post that says "not sarcasm." Actually I think Brian May is a good guitarrist, and if you ever wish to assume something about me... think again. I am a female, and I could either be in a bitchy mood or pmsing. So f*ck you.... I mean I love you.

I'd feel ashamed of that little immaturity commect except for the fact that someone was comparing Brian May to God, and I'm sure that could of offended someone. Plus I'm a 15 year old... its my porocative to be immature. Also, I was defending myself.

That's what I've been trying to tell you Axl_rose. Guns n' roses are very big fans of Queen and held Brian May with high regard and respect. Just watch the tribute and AIDS concert they did for Freddie Mercury for free- especially the interviews.
As with his sound- not everyone like's out of phase sounds but to each his own. I still think that his tone is the best because it is different and proper to the style of their music- its one of the most distinguished sounds in rock history ever- and it's pretty inovative too. Most musicians rely on production model guitars but this guy actually created his own sound by using a home made guitar and amp created by his friend and Queen bassist, John Deacon. It's also through the vast tonal capabilities of his guitar that he was able to make his guitar sound in many different ways, especially when he harmonizes his guitar to imitate an orchestra or a brass section of a jazz band. I think many people underestimate this guy.
To anyone offended with the use of the word "god"
Also, when we were referring to Brian May as god, it was more like a god with a small "g" not "G"- i don't know if others refer to him this way- atleast I know I do so I hope I don't offend anyone. To those uninformed, this expression was commonly used in the old days by the greeks and romans when showing their admiration to someone who is of great skill such as a hero, an athlete, or an emperor- it's supposed to be the highest form of flattery. I just idolize Brian May so much that I'm just applying a similar gesture- just as everyone who admired eric clapton used to raise banners that say: Eric clapton is god.

Woa guys!!
First off! What so impressive about his tone? It sounds like an epiphone thru a 10 watt practice amp! Man it hardly makes you go "wow!! how does he get a guitar to sound like that!!". Check out slash tone on 'Estranged', thats impressive! I think brian mays guitar tone is really annoying, sounds like a kazoo!
Yea Im aware of Guns n Roses liking of Queen but calm down! Theres about 10 bands infront of Queen as higher influences!
the fool
01-16-2004, 03:06 PM
the way he makes up his tone is more complicated than what you're thinking axl_rose- it's not just simply plugging an epi through a practice amp. He uses a deacy amp to create variations in tone which comes in handy when he's making layers of sounds and harmonies and stuff- and believe me, his sound doesnt just sound like an epiphone through a practive 10 watt amp at all- if it is, then it would've been very easy to imitate his tone and his tone wouldn't have been "distinct." But up until now, no one can copy brian. Some folks get very close- and all of this, thanks to Brian May for sharing his secrets and for sharing some of his equipment by allowing certain companies to build them from his specifications- but no one can play exactly like brian may- that's how unique his tone is.

Brian May is certainly a terrific guitarist, there's no question about that. However, since I am primarily a rhythm player, if I had to refer to a guitarist as "God", it would have to be Pete Townshend.
Axl_Rose
01-16-2004, 04:54 PM
Hmm.. yea either I dont have a clue about tone or I dont particulary care! You asked for our opinions on the guy n I gave it! I no a few other people that find his tone really annoying! Theres no denying his tone is closer to a kazoo than anything else
Dudes , arguing about tone is senseless .
Most Black/Death Metal heads I know hate blues & rock tones saying that it's a weak distortion , similarly blues & rock guys can't stand a femto-second of Death Metal ... A good tone is relative to each one's personal tastes.

If you know few other people who dont understand anythnig about guitars/ guitars sound/ it doesnt mean brian may's guitar sounds bad.
Queen and Brian may have influenced dozens of guitar based bands from guns and roses to dream theater and symphony x
and if you pay more attention to slash's sound youll notice that he *was* influenced by brian may more than any other guitar player.

axl_rose has some point...
I do admire Brain May's guitar style, he surely is unique...
but his tone... not like :o omg that a real killing tone... Im notimpressed by it.
btw Lets not forget Brain builds his own guitars, puts 5 pickups in them so getting to sound like him would be realy hard
the fool
01-16-2004, 09:17 PM
Correction, he doesn't put five pickups in his guitar- he uses 3 trisonics. But I guess even though you made a mistake pinpointing out how many pickups he's using, I guess it's fair enough to say that there's nothing to "oooh" about his tone- if you look at it in today's context. sure, today there's a lot of other good tones out there but you have to remember that these guitarists of new all owe their tones to innovative guys like brian may. The research and improvements of work of other guitarists, better technology, and new equipment has made it easier to create better tones and imitate what many of the highly regarded innovative tones of the past eras. For instance- when hendrix first came out, everyone was figuring out how he got his tone but now everybody now can basically do a pretty accurate jimi hendrix because of research and better, accessable technology. But try to understand that if you judge his tone in the context of his era- it's pretty inovative and unheard of. If you were growing up in the early 70s and first saw Brian May's first sounds come out- like many others (ie. your beloved guns and roses etc.), I'm sure his tone would be something that you would ooh and aaah about. Who would've thought of mixing rock and opera? Who would've thought that guitars can sound like a brass section of a jazz band? If you think Brian May's sound is thin, you should listen to him more because this guy has a lot of tones in his arsenal. I also admire this guy because unlike Hendrix, Page, and Van Halen, Brian May is the only guitar player that I know who never relied on production models (except for the ac30s and the trisonic pickups which was a pickup unheard of at that time) to make his tone. Both the red special- his guitar and the deacy amp is home made. It was because of his work with guitar layering, extensive harmonies, and orchestration that those techniques became pretty much a standard to modern musicians. I am aware that his tone is not something new nowadays but you have to admit that his sound was one of the best and the most unique during his era.

2 Questions: 1) What state are you talking about? 2) What expectations are you refering to? No offense but maybe you're the one who's in a messed up state. I actually feel good and at peace. My mind is not clouded with anger and all of these negative emotions. We were just talking about how good brian may is until you came along with your out- of- placed comment. Maybe you're the one who's in a state of some sort. Besides, if you were in a clear state of mind, you should've understood from my previous posts that i've never forced or commanded any one to read my posts- so I have no expectations of people reading or commenting on my posts. Just as you have the right to your own opinions no matter how misinformed they may be, everyone's entitled to read or not to read my posts. It's what you call free will. If you can't stand up my opinions and my criticisms then I welcome you to stop reading my posts. It's that easy really. Don't take it too personal. Besides, I wasn't trying to convert you or anyone to the brian may "religion" anyways- I was just expressing my adoration and thoughts about Brian May, and supporting Kirk 2nd in the process because I'm glad to have found a Queen fan. You're the one who came along with your "Brian May's tone sucks" that started all this crap in the first place. You say I'm in a messed up state? Go figure.

- Brian May is not God
- Brian May is probably not a genius
- Brain May is a very good songwriter, and has written some very cool leads for some very cool songs.
- Brian May, together with players such as Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth, helped inspire Yngwie Malmsteen and countless other lead players in the melodic metal style.
- I'm 16, and I DO know a thing or two about Brian May.

All I meant to say is that, if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say it at all because someone might take offense. How is this abuse? LOL. I did acknowledged his opinions- it's just I don't agree with them because I have my own beliefs to stand by. And in the process of showing my disagreemtn, I don't think I ever verbally cursed or abused axle_rose in any way. I never used any name calling or curse as to personally degrade him in my previous posts. I actually used the word "sadly misinformed." I was actually being polite.
How am I hypocritical? These are heavy words you are using against me. How is disagreeing to someone's opinions and voicing out the disagreement in a polite way hypocritical? I do have to right to disagree with other people's opinions don't i?

Talking to me is like talking to a kid? LOL No offense but the same can be applied to you. Are you even reading my posts carefully? Whatabout my quote? Atleast I had the decency to "shut up" when I thought my comments weren't appropriate.

Yes... he sure does have his own style and tone. When I listen to him try understand the logic in his phrasing. I listen to hear any of his heroes. He definately has left his mark in guitar history.

axle, let me remind you of your original post:
"lol dood I was joking I promise I wont post in this thread again!"
Let me analyze: You said you will never "post" in this thread again. you didn't specify that you will never post "words" in this post again, you just said that you will never "post" again. The fact that you posted a laughing face is a post isn't it? LOL

Hi y'all!! I hope this isn't inappropriate here, BUT at least Brian May maniacs might get a kick out of it...
I run a site called INTIMATE AUDIO, which has just issued its first CD, INTERPRETATIONS:
http://www.intimateaudio.com/interpretations.html
The disc opens with “Bohemian Rhapsody”—the WHOLE thing, played "live" with only acoustic guitar & voice, including the "Galiileo" section!! (Soundclips are at link above)
As for the rest of the disc, fans of Queen, Beach Boys, Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, and John Frusciante's solo material (among others) might enjoy it. It's all covers (licensed properly), recorded "live" in my home studio (playing and singing at the same time). Some of them are pretty crazy! And funny! And serious!
Here's the complete songlist, FYI:
1. “Bohemian Rhapsody” 6:03
2. “God Only Knows” 2:39
3. “Blackbird” 2:28
4. “Sweet Baby James” 3:52
5. “Hallelujah” 6:28
6. “She’s Always a Woman” 3:08
7. “Leader of the Band” 4:17
8. “Sister Golden Hair” 2:53
9. “Castles Made of Sand” 3:12
10. “Coconut” 3:44
Total playing time: 39:03
All songs used by permission. All rights reserved.
The full story (why the CD exists, how it was recorded, notes on the arrangements, etc.) and MP3/Real Audio soundclips can be found here:
http://www.intimateaudio.com/interpretations.html
Thanks for taking the time to read this (and hopefully laugh over some of them soundclips)!! Any feedback is appreciated!!!!!!

Thanks a lot!!!!!!
Brian May is THE MAN!
I think he's got a new signature model VOX amp too, or something, which sounds like it's probably great. I just read a review of it in Guitar One (I think that's where).
Tone for days :)
Take care,
Dale

actually, i have that amp. it's vox's imitation of the deacy amp- the amp that john deacon made for brian may which enables him to make those nice violin- like tones. i like it very much. it has this treble booster mixed with the gain switch and my guitar just sings when i use it to overdrive tube amps. its surprising how nice it sounds on my les paul and marshall. its what i used to use before i got the korg ax1500g. i dont have the ac30s or the guild BM guitar so my sound isnt exactly ala brian may, but its very nice. Bright and clean thick gain- i dont lose clarity and body on my tone at all unlike when i use the korg with my fender princeton 65. you should try one of these and get one if you like. they're very cheap. got mine for 230 canadian bucks.
