I think most Flamenco players are underrated and most modern guitarists (such as guitarists from the band Creed, Adema, ect.) are overrated

Was that of meant to be an or in the subject title? I'll try to best answer it anyway. Anathema and their fans are constantly going on about them being the most underrated band of the 90's which I don't believe is true so the statement that 'Anathema is underrated' is therefore overrated.

since this topic has been discussed for like a million times (over/underrated guitarrists, bands, bassists, vocalists, etc) i think it is overrated

Creed's guitarist (Mark Tremonti) is actually a highly competent shredder. I also like a lot of his songwriting, but he should show his skill a bit more in their songs. Not necessarily shred wanking, but some creativity in the lead department would be nice.
LP's guitarist (Brad Delson) is no slouch, and actually knows his theory and stuff, but his musical views are retarded. Besides, he doesn't practice any technical stuff, so he could never play any of the songs of the players he always talks sh*t about in guitar mag interviews.

Your right about Creed's guitarist but, yeah he should show his talent. I think the BAND is overrated

I think theyre a good band, I have Meteora and its actually very good, especially given as Ive alwyas hated them until recently. Im not what youd call mainstream and im not a fan of heavy music either (anything below the standard low e kinda scares me). Faint is the best song of 2003 for me.

I'm gunna be childish here n say Stinking Park. Guitarist pisses me off n Chesters voice is really irritating.
Also I'm gunna get an ear bashing n say Eric Clapton. Just doesnt have that magic for me especially when you look at his peers of the guitar explosion.
Kurt Cobain, good voice, simple n boring guitar player.

Since when was Kurt Cobain's considered good. I like Nirvana and everything, but grunge isn't neccessarily about the singers ability to sing.
When looking at some guitarists, like Eric Clapton, its their skills AND inspiration. Eric Clapton reaches out to other people besides guitarists.

Brian May - I mean hes written some very good tunes but he just seems self indulgent and I think his tone is horrible to be honest.

I don't think Flamenco guitarists are underrated....or jazz, classical, or blue grass guitarists. I don't think people doubt their ability to play....people just prefer music and musicians who accompany vocalists.
Why? I dunno.

Yeah, I think your right. I still think that many people don't give them much credit or maybe I just think so. As far I know, many guitarist don't give credit when needed to classical guitarist and flamenco guys (not jazz, I think it is quite popular). Well . . . at least these days when the mainstream is punk and harsh rock.
Dont get me wrong, I love rock , that is what motivated me to play guitar but you know . . . I'm just sayin'

I think I'm underrated. I don't really consider anyone overrated. They must of done something for so many people to like them, or the people are just ignorant, but there are many underrated guitarists. Not that it really matters to me, as long as I enjoy my playing.

About the only time we see ratings are in guitarist polls in crap mags like 'Rolling Stone' and NME, with voters probably mostly clueless 3 chord merchants impressed by anyone who knows a fourth. An alternative title to this thread could be, 'Who should and shouldnt appear in top 10 ot top 20 guitarist polls'. I'm generally pretty unimpressed by most 'name' rock guitarists Clapton, May, Slash, Richards etc. A while back someone here mentioned Shawn Lane so I checked him out. Well impressed, esp his stuff with Jonas Hellborg. A huge shame that he died without wide recognition. He could play the arse of any of the big names in electric guitar.

Mark Tremonti from Alterbridge is seriously under-rated, people think he sucks just because he was in Creed and had to play all their songs in the key of D just to accomodate Scott Stapp's lack of vocal talent. If you want good Tremonti stuff, check out the Alterbridge album.
Daniel Johns is another. If you want to hear some brilliant musical talent from him, check out Silverchair's Diorama or the Dissociative's album, his side project.

Defintely. I was a little sckeptical about Tremontis true ability. I heard a ton about how good he is (hence the numerous Guitar World Guitarist of the Year awards)... so I was patiently awaiting the Alter Bridge album. When I saw the video for the first single and he plays that solo I was like........Where was that in all the Creed songs?? Then, to further stimulate my curiosity I checked him out at Piere's in Fort Wayne, Indiana. WHOA!!!! The lead singer (despite coming out and saying "Fort Myers, you ready to rock!?"... when in fact we were in Fort Wayne!!!) sang his ass off. But Tremonti blew me away. I positioned myself directly in front of him and his pedal board and watched him shred the whole night. He played some pretty crazy stuff. Which is unheard of in todays modern rock scene.
As far as overrated goes........ Kirk Hammett of Metallica comes to mind. I love Metallica and I've seen them live and Kirk tore it up. But some of his stuff lacks the "Wow" factor. He is a great guitarist nonetheless.
haven't read this whole thread, but I'd like to nominate BB King as the most over-rated.... one trick pony....
bend, pull off, hammer, vibrato.... ab lib to fade....

For me every guitar player is unique in their own right, but unfortunately some players really stand out among the pack but were not given proper recognition and right credit for their contribution and talent. While some players were celebrated and were put in the spotlight by the media, but if you completely check their material and songs, it was just mediocre.
Here are some list.
OVERRATED:
Kirk Hammet - - - still the best mainstream shredder though.
Kurt Cobain - - -He won best guitarist in the online poll (GW)!!!
Slash - - - -He's Awesome in Guns N Roses but sucks in VR
Mike Einziger - - too much hype about his playing esp the media.
Tom Delounge (Blink 182) --- No comment, you Judge!
Eric Clapton --- people still think he is god !!!
Dont get me wrong, those are good guitarists epecially Kirk and Slash.
The problem is all people are so focused on them that people tend not to listen on other guitarists work and just go with the flow of media hype . Some are even household names.(Try asking some teens who are into rock or alternative music about great guitar players they know. Lets see the reply.)
UNDERRATED :
John Frusciante - - - The most versatile mainstream guitarist, Very diverse, can play almost all musical styles> Punk rock, Classic rock, Rap metal, Reggae, Pop and most of all can Shred, Ive seen him play Awesome leads live, both slow and blazing fast. He just fully show his abilities and talent, coz RHCP constrains him coz they focus more on the song, and Flea!
Mark Tremonti - - - At last people are now noticing his exceptional guitar skills, not long ago every one thinks he sucks when he was in Creed, Like John, Scott Stapps voice prevents him from unleashing his technical skills, coz he always need to play in D to accomodated Stapps range, Thanks to ALTERBRIDGE!!, If you want proof buy their album or see him live.
More underrated players or even unknown guys to some:
Yngwie Malmsteen
Nuno Bettencourt
Jason Becker
Marty Friedman
Vito Bratta
Vinnie Moore
Tony MacAlpine
Buckethead
If you know or like Vai, Satriani, Van Halen, Page and Hendrix, you will surely like and admire these guys, If you will just be open minded and not be carried away by what the media dictates us to listen. Peace!!!
