Go to the main page and click on Schmange. He has a tutorial that's all about tapping. It will take you from the basics of tapping to some quite advanced stuff.

Tapping can be done on acoustic but it generally sounds crap. The sound of the strings between the headstock and the fretted finger makes a dischord with the section of string you want to hear. You're best tapping on the wound strings of an acoustic because the thin strings are too quiet. If you amplify an acoustic tapping can sound OK if you're very good at it. Check out Van Halen's Spanish Fly, I think that was on a straight acoustic and it's awesome.

On electric it's very easy to play phenomenally fast with tapping but very few people use the technique as anything more than a way of showing off and play genuinely musically demanding and interesting things with it.

Tapping is really my staple technique. I have to say that I use it in about 70% of my solos. What drives me insane is when people write off tapping as an easy or cheap technique. If you use it correctly, it can be incredibly difficult and very musical. Sure one finger tapping ascensions on the E string aren't very hard at all, but two play a 4-8 finger tapped song on all six or even half of the strings can be a challenge and musically wowing. I use the technique (I'll admit) to show off occasionally, but ALWAYS with something musical, not just some lame keyless ascension.

Sounds crap?

There are a lot of acoustic players that using a lot of tapping, and it sounds terrific.

Listen to "Aerial Boundaries" by Micheal Hedges for a great example of acoustic tapping. It's a solo piece done using tapping almost exclusively.

Michael Hedges man, Michael Hedges...

Try listening to him.

He'll play his 6 string guitar (in some funky tuning of course) like its a chapman stick (plucking and tapping, with a bassline and melody all separate)!
