My advice: do some classics, but do some modern songs too, otherwise everyone will think that you're dorks (at least that's how it would have gone at my high school). People would probably love you if you played "Hey Ya" by Outkast. Your bassist will have to do overtime making up for the synth sounds though.

Others to think about...

-"Hey Joe" by Hendrix will probably get you suspended but the guys whose girls are skanking on them will love you for it.

-"Where Is My Mind" by the Pixies has a nice vibe to it.

-"Obstacle 1" by Interpol is a good song for a dance; it has a very danceable beat, and it's a love song. You may have to alter a few words in the chorus.

-"Trampled Underfoot" by Zeppelin. Normally I'd say "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" which is my favorite Zep song but that's kind of inappropriate for a dance, or "Immigrant Song" because I'm Swedish, but that's not really appropriate either and the little war chant will get you laughed at. Trampled underfoot is a great song because it has a beat that even the homies will think you could pimp to, but it's totally a dancing song, and it's fairly upbeat.

-"Never Met A Girl Like You" by Edwin Collins. Great vibe to it. You can replace the vibrophone with a guitar lick.

-"Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet. Perfect dance song.

Other than that all the songs I know are angry, depressed, aggressive or just plain profane. I'm sure others will have better suggestions.

You've forgotten Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight." That song is a fantastic slow dance.

oh and you should totally play Dr. Greenthumb by Cypress hill, and lead everyone in a singalong. After all, I take it this is high school.

Seven Nation Army - everyone knows that song plus the girls love it... and thats the only reason youre doing this, right?

But play songs people know, none of this Trampled Underfoot nonsense, its a dance.

Bush. You can't do covers without doing Bush. Machinehead, Comedown, Glycerine, pick one. They're all good.
