common quick lick

an easy one this....
there is common little widdle used in alot of lead breaks, in E for example you would play 12h15p12 on the Bstring then play 14 on the Gstring and repeat.
when i play it, the cleanest picking pattern ive found(playing fast) is to only pick the first note, the 12, and just hammer on when i get to the 14. i find that as i pick the 12 my thumb damps the unwanted open G as you lift off the 14. (i hope that makes sense, but i think most people know the lick i mean)
i just wondered how anyone else does it and if you pick the 14 how you damp the note when you lift off?

i just never lift my finger from the 14 on G. But if you have to for some reason just try resting your palm/thumb to dampen the unwanted open strings.

Either by your picking hand's side of thumb , or by not lifting your fretting finger totally of the string (keep it slightly touching the string to mute it).

BTW , it's not necessary but it's better if you can play a given lick with as many picking patterns as you can do , just as an exercise ... Try not using legato at all , and pick all the notes starting with a downstroke at the g-14's as an example.

cheers for replying, i tried it picking every note today and got up to 150bpm still playing comfortably and about 98% accurate, and i can play it easily at more like 170bpm only picking 1 or 2 notes. as if by magic, the improved accuracy of the picking combined with making sure you just 'lift' off the 14 and dont 'pull' off removes the need to damp the Gstring at all.
i think SLYs tip of picking any legatos you use as an exercise is great for anyone who doesnt do it already.

If you don't lift off the 14, the notes will bleed into each other, which sounds kinda messy. Unless that's the effect you're going for, of course.

i agree and found it hard to play it like that without having to make an awkward change in hand position.
for future referance i also found that fretting the 12 on the Bstring so that the tip of your finger damps the Gstring above to be an easier/more accurate solution to the unwantd pull off note than using the side of your pick thumb.
BTW aiwass, how would you do it, you obviously have a great technique having listened to your link in the general section.

I usually leave my finger on fret 14.
When I lift it up, I some times pull the string and
play the open G sting as well.
