Practicing slow, and then progressively speeding it up as you get better at the solo is a good way to learn. Its the way I do it, and i'm sure you'll eventually get it with enough practice.

Man. Slow is the way, but excersizes are also great for building up strength and speed and more importantly-accuracy while playing at speed.
Check out some of the speed tricks and excersizes on this site, some of em rock.
Keep in there, soon you will be a quick guitarist, and you will be ready to face your next challenge, always pushing to become a better muso.

Here's a Steve Vai warm up Excercise and its really good for getting your speed up to date! BUT! don't try playing it as fast at first, take your time with it!
E:-----------------------------------------1-2-3-4/5
B:---------------------------------1-2-3-4----------
G:-------------------------1-2-3-4------------------
D:-----------------1-2-3-4--------------------------
A:---------1-2-3-4----------------------------------
E:-1-2-3-4------------------------------------------
E:-5-4-3-2------------------------------------------
B:---------5-4-3-2----------------------------------
G:-----------------5-4-3-2--------------------------
D:-------------------------5-4-3-2------------------
A:---------------------------------5-4-3-2----------
E:-----------------------------------------5-4-3-2--
After that keep on ascendng untill you get to the last note on the High E and then slide up one note and start descending. Do this for the whole fretboard! After a while it gets boring! BUT! It gets the job done!

That would be a Petrucci exercise, but...
Anyway, if your left hand is the problem, isolate that area. Practice legato, and get a metronome.

Practice!!! Play every exercise you find on the net! Work with a metronome. Start slowly, then increase the tempo. Legato will make your fingers really strong!
