The fret board on my guitar is getting dirty from use

dont know whether to clean it up or leave it. the grain seems to be defined somehow, looks kinda sexy.

if i leave it will it matter?

Any thoughts?

I clean mine with an old tooth brush. I use guitar polish as the cleaner.

I am not sure this is wise, and would like feedback from others also....

.......the Jim Dunlop 65 Cleaner Kit. It comes with polish, fretboard cleaner and prep and other guitar cleaning goodies. I wouldn't recommend using polish on the fretboard 'cause it will "gum up". If you have a rosewood fretboard use some lemon oil with a rag and wipe it off real good afterward.
I have a picture of the kit if anyone wants to see it or go to http://www.jimdunlop.com and check it out.

so i guess the general feeling then is to clean it up, what do you say?

Redeye, what kind of fretboard is it? it makes a difference. If it is rosewood or ebony you can use a dab of pure lemon oil but it has to be the real deal otherwise you'll damage your guitar. For maple I just use the Dunlop 65 stuff that is listed above. More often than not, a simple wipedown without chemicles is fine between a thorough cleaning.

Thanks Bafaton,

But if you want the honest truth i am not sure.

Its pale is colour, kind of pine looking although im pretty sure thats not the case.

the guitar is a Sqiure Fender, wasnt particularly expensive as guitars go, about £130.00 pounds, im guessing around $80 or $90 dollars (please dont laugh i luv this piece of wood)so it probally isnt made from the best materials available

Thanks for your reply
