Thumbpick/fingers or flatpick/fingers?

Which technique is best for playing Brent Mason-style chicken pickin'. I prefer to use a thumbpick but is it "better" to use a flatpick? Is there something I can't do with a thumbpick? I think fast "moveable" runs (with no open strings) can be harder to perform with the thumb and fingers...

Whoever answers, any tips and excercises would help too.

Look at and listen to Terry Couch's tricks on this site (almost 100 of 'em). I seem to remember him mentioning thumbpick techniques and Brent Mason type licks. Or, e-mail him with your question. He's fairly prompt at replying.

Flatpicks with fingers or just fingers works for me.
