The year is almost over so I thought it would be interesting to get your opinion on the best movies of '03.
I'll break it down into 3 easy categories.
Best Picture
Best Actor/Actress
Best supporting Actor/Actress
Remember, there is no right or wrong answer and just go by the movies you have seen this year.

The best 2 movies ive seen this year were probably "The ring" and that movie with james van der dyk (Dawson from Dawson's creek?) which name i cant remember.
People tend to think the jananese origianl version of ring (ringu) was better , but i think the japanese version lacked some action and explanations the american version had.

Man, "The Ring" scared me *hitless, enjoyed all of the LOTR films as well also "The Hulk" was a winner (surprisingly) !
Pirates of the Caribbean was a bit of a let down and Finding Nemo sucked !
I also enjoyed 28 Days After, not your average revenge of the splat gore acid bather chain saw monster film !
It wasn't released this year, but nevertheless it was the best film I saw: Donnie Darko.

I LOVE DONNIE DARKO!!! If you liked that though, you would LOVE "Barton Fink" and you might also like "Pi." Both fantastic movies. This year though...hmm.... I've seen more movies than Ebert and Roeper, so hold on....
Okay, I got it: The Hulk wins nothing Simon! Come on dude! I really liked both "Finding Nemo" and "Pirates" though. I mean, Ellen Degeneres is hysterical in Finding Nemo and, as usual, Johnny Depp does a phenomenal job in "Pirates." Lord of the Rings definitely takes the prize for best film of the year, the movie is just cinematic genius. This has easily become the new ideal trilogy. Replacing Star Wars would never have been thought to be so easy.
Coming in at #2 is Kill Bill. Tarantino produced a solid work here. Wonderful soundtrack, fantastic acting, and the Tarantino touch once again combine to form a masterpiece in film. The scene in which Quentin uses an animated sequence to literally "illustrate the past" is astounding. On top of it all, the way this movie parodied all the 70s style Kung Fu movies was hilariously accurate. This movie was so gorgeous that I cried.
Best supporting actor/actress?
This of course goes to Andy Serkis. For those uncultured swine asking "who is Andy Serkis?" I'll tell you. He was the actor who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings. Quick question: what is a more difficult role to pull off than that of a creature who lived in darkness, alone, for hundreds of years while his mind was being slowly twisted and corrupted into insanity by a ring forged to do nothing but evil? I thought so...
Best Actor/Actress...
This is hard for me, because I can't seem to get the movies "School of Rock" and "The Return of the King" out of my head right now. Neither one qualifies for this award. I'll tell you what, I'm gonna dredge up an old movie and you bastards can deal with THAT!!! Best Actor goes to Jim Carrey for "The Truman Show" You want me to name a recent movie? TOO BAD! Kiss my ass and burn in hell!

best film: lord of the ring(u). the matrix was a complete failure compared to the lord of the rings finale.
best director: peter jackson
best actor: i wanted to vote for vigo mortensen but he wasn't nominated. But being a fan of old school classic acting, I'd vote for Jack Nicholson. But... if Johnny Depp is nominated (he's in the maybe list I heard), then I'd vote for him because I like his role on the Pirates of the Carribean.
best actress: I haven't seen cold mountain yet. Does anyone know if Nicole Kidman was naked in the movie. If not I'd vote for Diane Keaton (and no, i didn't vote for her because she had that 1 sec. naked scene with Jack Nicholson-that's just plain nasty!)
best supporting actor: andy jerkis- I mean serkis (smeagol)
best supporting actress: i can't think of any... hmmm... kathy bathes? lol (you have to give her some consolation- it takes a lot of courage doing that nude scene in gothika as nasty and as horrific as it may seem)

Best Picture-
The Last Samurai
I loved everything about this film with all of the essential elements of greatness.
The story was creative and masterfully written creating a certain dilema when you see this film. It makes you feel for the Samurai and their demise but at the same time you know it was necessary for the development of modern Japan.
The action was intense, graphic and realistic where in ROTK it was so fantastic, it was downright ridiculous in some parts.
There was superb acting by the entire cast that provided an interest that maintained my focus the entire movie.
Best Actor-
You guessed it, Tom Cruise for his outstanding dedication and hard work he put into this film. The man has been breaking his back for over 20 years putting out great films like Minority Report, Jerry MacGuire and Born on the Fourth of July. I have a love/hate thing with the guy but he deserves an Oscar for the great things he has contributed.
Best Supporting Actor-
Ok, initially I was going to vote for Ken Watanabe from the Last Samurai, but I actually think he has a real chance of getting an Oscar this year. I'm going to take this in a different direction and vote for R. Lee Ermey from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you have seen this movie, you know that this former drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket was the real star of this quality remake. He was rude, diabolical, intense and funny all at the same time. The guy took this potentially above average remake and made it a great movie to watch. Hands down the best horror I've seen all year and in a long time.

I talked to somebody who saw Cold Mountain, and Nicole Kidman does get naked in this film. Not enough for me to waste my time on it, I heard it was nothing but a love story with a few battle scenes....zzzz
On a different note, I heard from an unconfirmed source that Billy Bob Thornton was nominated for best actor.(?)
