Jazz

Anybody know any Jazz songs for a guitarrist to learn. Don't say it depends upon what you listen to, because I don't listen to Jazz I just like playing it.

i don't know any jazz songs in particular, but take a look at Pat Metheny, Al di Meola

I don't see how you can enjoy playing it, but not listen to it. There are many different types of jazz, so it entirely depends on the type that you like.

I've never really been exposed to jazz at all. I've grown up listening to southern rock, blues, grunge, ska, and alternative rock. I've started playing it, and I just love the sound of it. I'm trying to learn songs, so then I can go listen to them. Start to appreciate the artists behind them.

Fun to play along with, just improv and stuff, are the old school jazz guys. Louis Armstrong, Fats, those guys.

Fun but difficult for a beginner.

When I first got into swing and bebop, I would play over John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, and a few other guys' records, and I would have absolutely no idea what I was doing. It worked out in the end, but the path I chose was not the most effective I'd say..

I suggest fairly 'accessable' stuff with strong melody lines like "Breezin'", by ... dayum!! I just drew a blank - now I gotta go dig through my albums to get that guy's name....

.... got it! George Benson. He's got a smooth style that sounds really good. Bathe your ears in his cover of "Masquerade"!

Thanks you guys all your replies have helped me a bunch. I listent to Pat Methany's Bright Size Life, and I love it. :) I've always loved Louis Armstrong. Yep yep thankies!

You can buy "fake books" at music stores and over the internet..There basically books with hundreds of lead sheets of popular jazz tunes. Great reference material.

As for the quintessential jazz guitarist check out Wes Montgomery...he pretty much started the whole jazz guitar thing.

If your into jazz..... I wud highly reccomend the Jamey Abersold jazz books.
They come with a CD to play along with, and teach how to play leads, and where the chords come from.
Volumes 1, 2, 22 and 54 are the best.
I wud definitely check them out, their the best I've come across, but their not tab.

Check out Kenny Burrell's double cd, "Stolen Moments". He's got a bunch of good jazz guitar songs on there that you might want to learn.
