Whether you go back farther or not, those are some damn fine guitarists. I think Pete Townshend is one of the most underrated guitarists ever. He rocks my socks.

Thats funny, because Townsend thinks he's the greatest guitarist ever..
But, my biggest influences are probably Steve Morse, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Greg Howe, and of course Shawn Lane.

Greg Keelor?!?!?
I didn't know he had a style to influence others with - I'm not trying to be mean or sarcastic, but I haven't really heard him do anything beyond mild pentatonic stuff... I don't see how he could be in the same class as Page!

I want to say that guys like Holdsworth and Lane have been great influences on the way I play, but their genius is too far beyond me to actually influence my playing. I'll cite them as sources of "inspiration" instead. As for the guys that have actually influenced the way I play:
John Petrucci - Most obvious one. My phrasing (not to mention my aggressive pick attack and use of the neck pickup when alternate-picking) gives me away.
Michael Romeo - Tapped arpeggios and a lot of harmonic minor/neoclassical ideas. I also try to emulate some of his "blurry" legato lines, with varying degrees of success. Besides, his epic songwriting is truly inspirational!
Jason Becker - Currently rejuvenating my sweeping with some good ol' Becker arpeggios! :)
Yngwie Malmsteen - I guess I pay homage to him every time I pull a pedal tone lick or an A minor sweep arpeggio...
Players I'm getting more and more into: Stephan Forte, George Bellas, Chris Brooks (his album is in the mail :D), Marcel Coenen, Jarle H. Olsen (a young Norwegian player, sort of like a more "fusiony" Jason Becker) + a bunch of other guys.
Tele Master
12-23-2003, 08:16 PM
LOL!..I just like his crazy, messy style.. I'm not into who has the best technique and who can play at a billion beats per minute. Thats why I think he's great. He's just messy, and crazy..and he loves to bang the s**t out of that Bigsby.
Jolly McJollyson
12-23-2003, 08:30 PM
So, wait a minute, Telemaster. What I'm getting from your post is that sloppy guitar playing has influenced your style? Well THAT explains a lot.
Tele Master
12-23-2003, 08:32 PM
LOL..its just nice to see some good stuff coming from a guy that doesn't have "perfect technique" and can't do all the fancy shmancy stuff that some people can. Not saying that all the fanyc stuff is bad, I myself am just not into it.
iamthe_eggman
12-23-2003, 11:26 PM
All he does is take a two-note chord, rail on it as fast as he can and somewhere near the tempo, then rams his whammy bar in a convulsive way.
Sorry, I have a lot of pent up rage against Greg Keelor.
Have you ever seen Jim Cuddy play? He's way better. Or Kim Deschamps, their session player who also plays some lead and pedal steel in concert - he's wicked.
Tele Master
12-24-2003, 10:26 AM
Ya, I've seen Blue Rodeo 3 times, and Kim is awesome, and so is Cuddy. But what I'm saying is that, I like Greg's crazy, messy way of playing. It just appeals to me.

there's a lot of guitarists out there that has influenced me but my main two are paul mccartney and brian may. It's funny because mccartney's not even considered a virtuoso guitarist- Harrison's better than him. The most, he's more of a bassist because of the role that he played with the Beatles, but that's not the point. He's my number one because he's the first one who influenced me to learn how to sing. And from singing, picking up the guitar was automatic because I just gotta know Beatles songs. I loved his persona more than his guitar playing and that got me making music.
If mccartney inspired me to play, brian may was the one who gave me the inspiration to keep on playing. There's probably a lot of players better and faster than him but again that's not the point. I like him because I can relate to him. Having times when I was the only guitar player in the band, he showed me that its not necessary to have two guitar players- all you have to do is create your own sound. I also like his style- sort of like a minimalist at times (in my opinion) although i bet he can play 30 min. solos if he wants. He's solos are short but exact, distinct, very melodical, and full of emotions. It basically tells a story- well composed. It's like a well composed short essay. I always find that the hardest essays to write are the short ones.

I like all the older stuff off the Little queen album and Dreamboat annie etc...Some really off the wall lead work I'Im not so much for the effects on everything but the licks are truely choice.
The lead to Magic Man is HOT.
My first regular giging group was a female vocal band and we covered allot of Heart after we started playing Magic Man I got totaly into trying to right licks with that off the wall slurred effect. From then till now I prolly sound nothing like that anymore but thats were the ball started rolling.

- Yngwie Malmsteen
He showed me classical influcenced music, I found myself loving to play classical music.
His techniques are realy great and I think its absolutely the limit to play like Yngwie.
- James Hetfield (Metallica)
Accualy Hetfield is a better guitarist than hammett I think. Metallica got me into guitarplaying, and im still playing almost everything they created. I love the old stuff :)
- Alex Lifeson (Rush)
I love Rush there music, and Im getting realy into that stuff lately
- Chris DeGarmo (Queensrÿche)
Real natural style of playing, classical influences, and a great music writer :) Also acoustic he can kick some ass!
these 4 are my main influences I guesss,
some more guitarists I like to hear:
- Paco De lucia
- Slash
- Angus Young
- Eddie Van Halen
- Dave Murray

for me that would have to be that old dude who plays the guitar on the subway. he's freakin amazing! he's blind, he's almost deaf, only stands on one leg, and plays the guitar with only 7 fingers but he still sounds so good- i started taking the subway!!! I especially love it when he plays "blue moon of kentucky."

DUDE!! REECE!! All Kirk does is shred man! Try hearing a solo without him shreading. He just plays like 3 or 4 notes and has an extemely light pick. On the other hand . . . Jimi and the gang do all this mess with their guitar that blows people away!! Kirk is ok but all the does is play regular scales with with loads of distortion. He is a nice guitarist but he needs to play somtin else. Plus . . . please note that Jimi played with a right handed guitar when he was left handed. That mean most everything he played he made up by himself and was self taught. O well . . . you should not compare guitarists. They all play with their own style.

Umm, didn't Satriani influence and teach Kirk how to play? So, if we are going to say that Hammet is awesome, then shouldn't we give credit where it's due. I just recently realized that Kirk wasn't the prodigal son of the guitar.
Let's give a big hand to Mr. Romeo, Mr. Malmsteen, and Mr. Petrucci!!
Jeez, I can't believe none of you have said anything about Cobain yet. Wasn't he an awesome guitarist......

Kirk Hamster can eat my ass and balls (to use a famous phrase invented by the great Mike Portnoy). His technique is sh*t, his vibrato is practically nonexistent, but still uncontrolled enough to be annoying, and the theoretical/compositional aspect of his soloing is immature at best. Somebody has to teach him how to outline chord tones and progressions. Now, there are worse guitarists out there, but the fact that he, in his GW interviews, is revered as such an authority on guitar (the word "virtuoso" has been used), and he himself seems way too confident in his own playing, regardless of the fact that he can't even play his old solos anymore, really PISSES me off.
Metallica WAS a great band - long, long ago. Kirk WAS an ok guitarist, but has now thrown away even the little potential he once had as a youngster, in favor of surfing, and being a pseudo-spiritual, transsexual hippie.
Oh and Reece: I'm not a huge fan of Hendrix either (as a songwriter and innovator, hell yeah, but not as a guitarist), but you need to check out some real players, and get your head out of your ass. Ever heard of John Petrucci? That's right, the guy three places down from Kirk's 1st place on the GW reader's poll. If any of the GW readers had half a brain cell, he would have been #1, because he eats three of Kirk for breakfast.

This is the greatest thread of all time.
It's amazing how much the media can control people. Hell, just take a look at the Rolling Stone Top 100 guitarists. Jack White for Pete's sake made the list. Terrible media.
Kirk Hammet is not good, I don't think he ever was any good. The fact is most of the solos weren't even written by Kirk, James wrote them. To me, that says a lot about Kirk right there. If you're going to talk about a guitarist in Metallica it should either be Cliff Burton or James Hetfield. Not the Hamster man.
