revently I've gotten more and more out of modern rock playing and a little more into jazz. But I still dont know how the guitar lines in jazz improvs are formed. I've seen a lot of jazz players recently and when they improv its like they are basically playing arpeggios or like one or two note per string ideas. I know my melodic minor scales and pretty much any scale i would need for jazz. But where do I begin on converting my "linear" rock ideas to jazzier phrases? Should I just learn a lot of arpeggios? And how can those be used in a song context?

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, a lot of fusion players (Gambale anyone?) play a lot of sweeping. Don't necessarily think arpeggios, just stay within one scale for a while, but skip around on the strings I guess. Its a place to start at least.

You should buy a book of jazz riffs or look on line for some ideas. Also learning jazz melodies will help you phrase some jazz ideas into your playing. If you feel up to it try Take 5, Anthropology, or Spain.
