Classical Songs turned into Rock Songs

Are there any bands that have turned an old(really old) classical song, like Fur Elise, into a rock version?

Please don't steal my idea, but last year my band did a cool rocked out version of Moonlight Sonata. I'm trying to get a studio version done and I'm visiting my pianist tomorrow night!

Bach's (?) "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" was done up by Apollo 100 as "Joy". Not a guitar piece, though, it was definitely a keyboard-fest!

And "Tocatta And Fugue in Dm" has been subjected to some very diverse treatments, as has "In The Hall Of The Mountain King".

Richard Straus might have some interesting comments on the things people have done with the first movement of his "Also Spract Zarathustra" (sp?).

Jethro Tull did a cover of Bachs' Bourree which was pretty cool. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer covered a lot of classical songs.
For a reverse situation, Steve Howe from Yes wrote and recorded Mood For A Day on the Yes Fragile album, has become a staple peice for classical guitarists.

For classical covers gone rock, check out bands from the progressive rock era, and the shred guitarists of the 80s' & 90s'.

House of the Rising Sun was actually a folk song, or Irish song (I forget which one) that was reworked into a rock song. The original was about a girl who goes to work in a Brothel. For a cool trick, try singing Amazing Grace over the changes of House of the Rising Son.

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer...couple of my favorite classical covers are Copelands "HoeDown" and "Fanfare for the Common Man". I know off the top of my head, that they also recorded versions of Murzarki (sp?) "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Ravels "Bolero", among many others.

Jeff Beck also did a cool version of Bolero.
Extreme did a cool version of Flight of the Bumble Bee.
Phish always does 2001 Space Odyssey.

While surfing the web one night I came across a guitarist from Seattle who had a cd out called Strat to Stradivarius which had a lot of cool classical covers on it.

I know theres a few version of Sabre Dance, I cant remember the composers name, something russian, none of which I particularly like. They usually end up as self-indulgent noodling, pity cos its such a great song.

House Of The Rising Sun Im sure is an old blues/pre-blues black song, "Down in New Orleans...", if it was Irish Im sure Id know about it.

Muse also drew from Bach's Toccato en Fugue in D Minor for the intro riff to Plug In Baby, very good song btw

Bach's Air On G is played acoustic by Malmsteen. He improvise some stuff and then start playing it and then beethovens Ode to Joy.

Green Day - Basket Case. Except, they didn't make their own version of it. They just ripped off the chord progression, and quite blatantly, too.

I'm talking about the "Kanon" by... was it Brahms? I just know the piece, but I'm terrible with composers.

You're right. Canon by Pachelbel. Found it in an old guitar magazine I had lying around.

Most probably is. They left it out in my guitar mag, but...

I just know the piece (the original, not Basket Case) as "that really cool classical piece that my bass player plays Chapman Stick style on his six string." :D

i can play about 2 to 3 minutes from the beginning of canon in D on the classical guitar..i stopped learning it because it started to become boring..i had heard it so many times and had to play it all the time..it was just a nuisance but a nice song

yngwie definetly did beethovens fifth along with other classical/rock songs another classical/rock was randy rhoads he was a classical guitarist when one day he was asked to try a metal piece witch was a easy transition
