Just kidding. I don't know, probably Satriani or Vai. But I'm also the only guitarist in the world who's never listened to Dream Theater.

my fav guitarists are (in not particular order)

yngwie malmsteen, steve vai, joe satriani, marty friedmen, chris poland, dimebag darrel (funny how no one mentioned him earlier concidering he's probably the best all around metal guitarist in the biz) stanley jordan (probably the most technically advanced player ever and sadly i doubt any of you know who he is.. anyways lets just say he's a jazz guitarist who two hand taps all of his stuff. he plays the rythem and the lead at the same time.. and he's fast as hell.. seriously if you get a chance to hear his stuff do it.. it's so amazing you're head will probably explode.) and then rhodes, srv...the list can go on

hello JSV.. no disrespect to you either but that was not a joke. i truely believe that dimebag derrel is perhaps the best metal guitar player in the biz. you may not like his music, but you can't deny he is a well rounded player. he can write REALLY heavy riffs, ha can write really melodic riffs, he can solo like a demon and he has a magical way with the tremolo and harmonics that is outta this world. i really don't get what you don't like about him. he is a great guitar player. you may not like him, or his music but got to respect what he can do.

I think what he's getting at is that Dime isn't that technical a player, the most inventive, the most versital or even the most consistant.

He's a lot like Flea in that they both have very unique styles, but if you're not a fan, they're not impressive players.

You like what you like, he likes what he likes - it's not a big deal.

Or so you think. Everyone likes different styles of playing, and Dimebag's is somewhat unique, isn't that what this thread's all about? Anyhow, I can't stand Darell's playing either. He uses way too much distortion and he's too repetitive for my tastes (although I'm being somewhat hypocritical because I do like Yngwie Malmsteen).

"Mikewie", my friend, I certainly meant "NO DISRESPECT" to YOU (as my post implied), and I'm genuinely sorry if I upset you. I hope we can volley-n-tag' here on the board & be friends. However, you didn't state merely that you "liked" this cat; ...concidering he's probably the best all around metal guitarist in the biz...
In fact, I'm kind of surprized "I" wasn't ridiculed for mentioning MY fav' (first response in this thread)?!!
Our "opinions" are based on our experience, education, and perception, amongst other things. Because of the variables in our ability/experience, we may perceive things which effect the criteria of our judgements. So from my own perspectives, and that which I've been exposed to, have influenced which distortions I personaly employ to label something "superior" in a given field of expertise.

YOUR opting to express a personal point of view, in a forum which appears to invite the free expression of public opinion, has inadvertently clashed with My Own, resulting in a (frequently predictable) misunderstanding amoungst brothers whom are still willing to uphold the diplomatic etiquette of RESPECT for each other.

I can only hope I properly apologized for the humorous method in which I chose to display my opinion; defended my position without becoming "defensIVE", and have retained your respect for me as a fellow guitarist/musician, and member of this splendid community of brothers.

In closing:
1. You still have my respects, my friendship, my brotherly love, (and I can only hope for the same from you).
2. My favourite guitarist is still "ME".
3. There is, and never will be, a "BEST" guitar player in any field (although I would personaly put my money on Jennifer Batten or Paul Gilbert)
4. Many of you will think I'm NUTS & outta'-my-mind... Good for you!
5. Dimebag Darrel STILL does not impress me in the least.
6. If one expects to find total harmony and accordance by taking literally those things which we find 'poorly' typewritten on the vast wasteland of internet message boards; one will also find vast amounts of disappointments.

7. "Mikewie", if I witnessed someone picking on YOU, in a way I believed was unfair or disrespectful; I would be there in a heartbeat to defend you as a brother! You have My Word as a gentleman.

Good day, and God bless.

Never heard Dream Theater?! You're missing out! Either get "Images and Words" for the music that revolutionized modern progressive rock, or "Train of Thought" (new this month), heavy riffs, crushing choruses, inhuman guitar solos, and everything the new Metallica should have been. The other albums kick ass too, but one has to start somewhere...

Oh and as to who my favorite player is... It varies from day to day, although they're usually from the same "top 5" list.

Today I'd say probably Shawn Lane, although I just got the new Dream Theater album and recently saw Symphony X live, so John Petrucci and Michael Romeo are high up on the list too...

for a long time it was Satch till I discovered the Hellecasters and Danny Gatton. Hard to pick one of the 3 Helles but Jerry Donahue slightly edges Will Ray and John Jorgenson cos of his banjo finger picking style.

Hellecasters kick ass. Hell III, new axes to grind is awesome, return to holywood is good (but not nearly so good) and the other I haven't heard.
Satriani may be all round my favourite player but the last two albums I didn't like much.
I love Momentum by jennifer batten also.
Alex Lifeson from rush has played several of my favourite solos; check out La Villa Strangiato and Xanadu from their live album exit stage left. The solo on Marathon from "A show of hands" is exquisite also.
The best metal player, for my money is not dimebag. Ever heard Glenn Tipton on his solo album "Baptism of fire"? The eponymous track is absolutely riveting, tons of melody, fantastic technique, I mean GOD! the guy sweep picks pinch harmonics in both directions like it was easy! Frederik thordendal from Meshuggah scares the **** out of me.. not only is he heavy but he's jazzy, kinda like Allan holdsworth with more balls.

Bands don't always have the power to put themselves on TV, and they definately can't put themselves in your CD player. Executives (many of whom don't know jack about music and what's good) decide what goes on TV.

Dream Theater is a quintet: John Petrucci on guitar, John Myung on bass, Mike Portnoy on drums, Kevin LaBrie (who goes by his middle name James, since there was another Kevin [Moore, then keyboardist] in the band when he joined) on vocals, and finally Jordan Rudess. These guys are MONSTERS when it comes to technique, without being bland ala Malmsteen - and this is especially evident on their latest album. In my opinion, LaBrie is the worst in the band, though most bands with really good guitarists seem to have bad vocalists (though LaBrie isn't bad, he's not as good as the other members). If they had someone like Symphony X's Russell Allen singing, Dream Theater would be the best band ever, period (IMO, that is).

I really suggest you go out and pick up Dream Theater's "Images and Words" and "Train of Thought". If you like that, pick up their other albums; if not, sorry. I doubt you'll be disappointed, though.

I like Dimebag, Zakk Wylde, Randy Roads,Eddie Van Halen, Kurt Cobain (even though alot of ppl on here will laugh at me for that)Tony Iommi, and Daniel Johns most ppl probably don't know who he is, he's silverchair's singer and guitarist he's bad as hell that whole band is. And chuck berry

the fool
12-09-2003, 11:18 PM
i have a lot of fave guitarists- chuck berry, bb king, george harrison, eric clapton, jimmi hendrix, eddie van halen, peter frampton, jimmy page, toni iommi, santana, stevie ray vaughan, keith richards, jerry garcia, buddy guy, frank zappa, pete townshend, angus young, satriani, vai etc. etc.

...but out of all of these guys, my all time favorite would be brian may. and i'm not saying he's the best in terms of skill. hell, first of all, there's so many guitar players out there and its hard to say who is better than who- infact, it is unfair to do that comparison because all of these guitarists have their different styles and they're masters at their own specialties. They are each in a world of their own. Second, when we make comparisons of such vast and diverse musicians, we forget the matter of different eras. Everyone's work were revolutionary in their own era and each contributions are as important as the other because without it, there wouldn't be any advancement- everyone benefits and improves from what the others have done in the past. For instance, when hendrix first came out-his work was considered out of this world and unique- no one can do it. Because of the standard he set, nowadays, everyone can play his songs and add their lil bits to it so that the standard that he set is raised so that the next generation guitar players can improve it further. therefore, i give props to all of them.

i only like brian may out of the whole lot of them in a sense that he makes a personal appeal to me that's all. for me, simple is the better and to me, he's the most simple of all guitar players. he doesnt spin or break guitars on stage like others- whatever hype and emotions he displays it in his solos which he plays with such passion! he doesnt play a billion notes like page but his articulation is superb and the length of his (very melodic)solos really gets into you. He is also unique in a way that he made his own guitar (unique at that time)unlike others who relied on production models, whose sound is one of the most distinct. I also like his use of guitar harmonies and orchestration and thanks to him it is now a standard in rock. he is well educated and smart with degrees in physics and astronomy (anyone know of any famous guitarist who have a physics degree?). And lastly, everyone respects him. Just watch the tribute to freddy mercury concert and their comments to brian may. Everyone's there- nuno bettencourt, tonni iommi, robert plant etc. and they admit being big fans of brian may.

What? Never heard Dream Theatre?...that must suck.

Dream theatre is home to an awesome guitarist (John Petrucci) and a similarly great bass player ( John Myung )

Give them a listen...as to what sort of music they play, I find it best described as a sort of classic metal with more mainstream friendly melodies etc...perhaps a pop-metal of sorts, although it is not fair to use that as a genre to describe them...Think Queensryche...With Balls!

Take a listen...They rock

I love these posts... who's your favorite? what??? that dude sucks!! you gotta hear this! =) kills me every time.

There are soooooo many people out there that move me and inspire me to keep at it that the list is dizzying.

I do like the 'ole standards
SRV
Clapton
Hendrix
yadda yadda
(fill in your guitar great here)

but I will say that there are so many people that I've been turned onto just from reading the posts (good things do come from here!)

The latest on my finds is a guy in Oregon called Justin King. He's got this acoustic, slap, tap, funk thing going on that is just insane....

back to the point of the post... my all time favorite, hands down, there is no substitue (porsche!) is SRV. My brother took me as a suprise to see him on New Years eve of 89 - 90 in NYC and I've been hooked ever since.
