He said they were "one of" the greatest bands ever. Not "the greatest". Opeth are amazing. The way they can write such haunting chord progressions is just beyond me. Additionally, their lyrics are AMAZING, and Mikael Åkerfeldt, besides having a very good clean voice, has got to have the meanest death metal growl ever. Demon of the Fall almost makes me **** myself...

I think Ive heard the "wrong" songs to like the band.
What are some good Opeth songs?

Demon of the Fall
The Drapery Falls
Face of Melinda
Harvest
Patterns in the Ivy (I & II)
Windowpane
Hope Leaves
Bleak

Listen to ALL of these MANY times for a decent first impression. There are so many facets and nuances, so many different aspects of Opeth's music that merely a few listens just won't suffice.

Am I the only one that things thats a bit silly? Having to listen to a song several times just to see if you like it?

Depends what kind of music. Some songs have more nuances than others, and sometimes the entire point lies in just those nuances. Listening to a song only once just doesn't do it justice as an artistic expression, if you ask me.

I agree a 100% that some song needs to be listened to several times before you start to like them. When I first heard yngwies "black star" I thought it was so boring. But now, after have listened to it many times, I think its much better! The same thing happened when I got into death/trash/black metal, at first it only seemed to be a lot of heavey distorted noise, but later I discovered the great melodies in the songs.

Anyways I'll check out those Opeth songs now!:)

Yeah, aiwass, I agree.. The CD:s I kept longest isn't those I worshiped from the beginning.. Some music acctually take time to "find" and bands like Dream Theater can still surprise me, although I have heard all their songs tousends of times..

Anyway, I'm glad some of you liked them to.. I saw them in Gothenburg last week, and it was all amazing and once I got home I ordered those Opeth CD:s I missed..

By the way, one guy told me that they sounded almost like early Katatonia. Do any of you agree? I havn't heard Katatonia at all, but if what he said is true, I will..
