Don't know how to play this

At the end of the live version of Join me from HIM (track length: 7:25 mins, you can get it from napster), there is a solo performed and I don't know, how the parts of this solo, when it sounds as if the guitar screams, are played. Perhaps these are flagolees (are something like that) but I really don't know.
Another question, does HIM play with overdriven or with distortion effect, where is the difference (and how can I listen it) ?

well sorry i dont have any help from you, but you made a point that id like to figure out my self overdrive or distortion effect, what is the difference? id like to know!
