Hey folks. Looking for some advice.
I've finally got enough money to upgrade my amp from a terrible sounding 15amp. It'll mainly be used for home practice and the occasional band practice. I want something which I won't need to upgrade again for a long time and will sound good and be able to get a range of sounds from. Hoping to get a Les Paul in the near future.
I really don't know where to start much beyond size and price. Thanks for your help.

For home usage and occasional band practice , a 50watt combo would be good enough.

My Fender Hot Rod works great (40watt, all tube) for home, band, or gigs. I've used it for all three and have never turned the volume over 4 on the clean, and 2 on dirty. Lots of power. About $850 new(canadian), but you should be able to find a used one around.

DUDE! I just checked out the new Line 6 Spider II's and they are very sweet and loud!!! You can get into one for about $399.

Dude...depends how much you have to spend. Those Fender Hot Rods are sweet, but so are the Line6 Spider2`s. I think the fender as digital amps, although cool, seem to lack the balls, even though they have insanely heavy distortions.
Try out a Crate Blue Voodoo, or Hughes and Ketner tube amp, maybe even a Laney if you can get hold of one.

MARSHALL...tube of coarse, yes, they can get pricey but find a decent used one, that should be good enough, they revolutionize rock'n'roll, haha, good enough for me anyways, but they do sound awesome, they're not just a name. They make 50watt 1x12 combos...can get a nice jcm 800 or 900 used for under 500 bucks most anywhere you look, they'll give you a nice all-around sound. the idea behind a tube amp is cranking it to get that real gritty, ballsy sound. Those 40watt jcm2000's are also a mean little amp, pack a lot of punch even at lower volumes, they're all tube...I think you can get one of those for around $500 used...whatever fits you best, if you want a more traditional sound, then get a tube amp for sure, marshall especially because they're what you hear listen to hendrix, healey, srv, ac/dc, guns'n'roses, frampton, clapton, even the earlier Van Halen stuff and the list is endless. Tube amps just have a tone and characteristic that'll you'll never find in a solid state amp.
