I have 2 vehicles, an 88 Corvette, and a 94 GMC Pick-up.
The 'vette resembles the batmobile, and the truck is just plain jane.

I drive a '98 Mazda extended cab 4x4 with a 4" lift on it and 33x12.50x15 tires, brush guard, tented windows, and a camper shell. I couldn't stand to have a car. Nothing against them, just not my cup of tea. I'm not worried about how fast I can go. But, I bet I can go more places in my truck than any car or little SUV can go...lol. Not that that is important, but it is fun to play in the mud. I also love to hunt, so a truck is just more practicle for my needs.

Currently I have a 2000 VW Jetta GLS (all the power options, moonroof, etc.) but no leather, and a lethargic 115hp 2.0 4cyl. It's a stick though so I can eke a little extra performance out of it. In the US everyone drives an automatic, and so it can be fun to sit next to a BMW 5-series and rev your engine to 3500 rpm, then dump the clutch and fly off the line for about 10 seconds, before his tranny catches up...
I used to have a 1986 Saab SPG (Aero in Europe) that was totally pimped out... Koni racing suspension, transveresely mounted 1.8l turbo engine (it came with a T3 but I put a T4 on it), oversized intercooler, MSD Ignition, stage 3 heads... it was unbefrickinleaveably fast, I could smoke damn near anything off the line with it, and what was best was the fact it was somewhat distressed cosmetically so people in BMW's would get all ticked off that some kid in an old Saab with a rusted quarter panel dusted them. Also had a Nakamichi cd player (6 disc in dash), Infiniti Kappa Reference speakers all around with Boston Acoustic tweets, and two W6's in the trunk... damn I miss that thing... the engine and tranny kicked off at 240,000 miles.
But yeah I'm getting that Skyline, that'll be even more fun.

I come from a really poor family, I just was fortuitous enough to drop out of high school and start working at a few jobs that paid me well (bellboy in a hotel in Downtown Boston: about $200 a night, and now a Lexus/VW Salesman in Santa Monica, CA: about $4500 a month) and since I'm 19 and don't have kids...
I proudly ride my newly acquired Giant Boulder, 21-speed mountain bike, and my TRS Access Rollerblades.

I drive a 2001 Neon and an 1985 Ford Ranger pickup that goes so fast it's peeling off all the paint LOL. Or it could just be a crappy paint job... Don't know, don't care. I traded a Viper car alarm for the truck. I am looking at a new Dodge Ram with the Hemi in it though... I am just trying to get my pocketbook to justify the 12k engine.... I mean hell that much money could be a couple of new guitars for me... I could have my Sambora double neck Kramer and maybe 2 San Dimas Charvels... The Hot Rod Paint job one is still eluding me...So is an original Jay Jay French Bullseye model...
OH PonyOne... How could you POSSIBLY defile those wicked sounding Boston Tweets by mating them with Infinity... Tisk Tisk... I won't even get into the JL W6 thing... I could rant for days on that subject... My Neon runs all Boston Z series for mids and Boston Pro 10's for the subs, powered by Boston amps (2). It's nice to work for a Boston dealer. I also run an older Sony CDX-C90 head unit. Wicked piece. I highly recommed it if you can find one, albet it will run you the price of a decent guitar if you find one.

Yeah the W6's weren't as cool as I thought they were.... i shoulda got some W7's... :)
Yeah this time around I'm not sure what I'm gonna do (when I get the almighty Skyline: I just talked to my parents who are going to help me cosign on a loan, now I just need to find a bank). I liked the Nakamichi a lot, it had stellar sound, plus it was single din, but it held 6 cd's, so I may just repeat that much. They also make another single din add on that allows for another 6 cd's.... 12 cd's in dash is pretty cool. But I've heard that there are some nicer decks out there; I don't really keep oup on car audio as much as i do with the cars, I just know I like having an obnoxiously loud stereo so I can piss off all the homies with my pasty white guitar playing ass.
I loved the tweets though, I'll probably get some more of the BA's. I was thinking about some MB Quart this time around, I know they're supposed to be pretty good. I mean the truth of the matter is I really don't know what to do. Hey since you sell the stuff, you could give me some advice, right?

Yeah I can give you some advice Pony... Unless you are ready to lay down some serious cash for some good MB quarts (i.e 800-1000 dollars) don't waste your time with them. Even the cheaper Bostons blow them out of the water and there are way less warranty issues with them. W7's are nice, but again way overrated, and unless you got the cash for a large amp to drive them, are also a waste of money.

b_hoves,
imho an M5 isn't really even a 5 series, it's something way beyond that... a 5 series is a large sedan which, in the case of eveything short of the 535 and 540, is somewhat underpowered... but the people that buy 525i's and 530's seem to think that they are ready for the LeMans.
Most people out there (at least in the US) drive automatics. With an automatic, with most cars (BMW included, and I know becuase I drive them on a daily basis), if you stomp on the gas the engine will not shift until about 5000 rpms; in some cars, not until 6000 rpms (ouch!). YOu have to lift your foot off the pedal and let it pop into gear because the tranny can't keep up with the torque being thrown into it, so it can only shift when it's no longer laboring to work... then you stomp back down, and repeat... but most of the people who drive autos don't realize this they just think "HA! I've got 6 cylinders and 220 horsepower, and so he's toast..." sure my Jetta is about 115hp (maybe 117 with my improved, platinum tips park plugs and the high octane i put in it), and only 4 cyl, but it also weighs substantially less, and when i rev up and dump the clutch, my car is already at 2500-3000 rpm and producing power when i let off on the clutch... so while their engine is still revving itself up to 3000 rpms mine is already running.
The delaership I work at has at any given time at least four Jetta 2.0's and at least 3 of those have auto transmissions. The automatic transmission on these cars is pathetic and worthless, and no, there is no way in hell that a VW 2.0 or 1.8T with an auto trans could beat a BMW 535 off the line. But a GTI VR6 5-speed with some good mods could beat a (stock) M5, and they do on a regualr basis...
Also a lot of it has to do with driving prowess... most of the people who buy these really bling-bling super powerful cars do it to show off, not becuase they actually enjoy the machines. You know the people I'm talking about, the guy in the baseball cap in the Carerra Turbo who doesn't shift to 2nd for about a minute becuase he's afraid of a bug hitting the finish too hard and leaving a mark.
Again, in the past 8 months since I've been in this business I've driven more types of cars than most people do in their lives, from Daewoos to Ferraris (the perks of working at a VW/Lexus store). Lexus actually makes one of the few automatic transmissions that will actually pop into gear when you are flooring it (it quickly diverts the torque away, pops the gear, then goes straight back no matter what), the thing that sucks about them is that they have a 1.2 second delay when you slam on the pedal; this is a safety feature so that you don't accidentally open up 300 horses into the bumper of the car in front of you when you meant to jam on the brakes. But it is a pain in the ass for those of us who watch the road... Chevy's 400R is one of the best performance autos out there as well.
A lot of cars out there (infiniti, BMW, MBZ, Lexus, some VW's, Audi's, Porsches, etc) use a chip to control the automatic transmission, and so there are comapnies out there that make chips that alleviate this problem. BMW's tiptronic on the 3 series and all 5 series but the 540 is worthless, like that of the VW's and Audi's, it's totally functionless and it still automatically shifts you at 4000 rpm anyway so what's the point? It's only good for showing off to your buddies when you downshift to a lower gear. Lexus and the tiptronic in the Porsche Cayenne and VW Toureg is a smidgen better but still a gimmick.
I hate to say it but the best tiptronic I've ever played with was in a '97 Honda Prelude... it will actually redline, and it pops into gear almost as quick as you could shift it, with no clutch dance. I actually wouldn't mind getting a 'Lude at all, the H22 motor can be built up to do all-motor 10 second quarter miles (the fastest ever was something like 9.3) which isn't bad at all for a 4cyl, and it's center of gravity is wonderfully low... i just have to reconcile it being a Honda now...
But still, clutch is the way if you wanna go fast. M5's with clutches... yeah those are the ones that go from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. The worst clutches I've ever driven were in a Chevy Tracker, a Honda Accord and a Porsche Carrera... yes, a Porsche, with a retarded clutch... the engine is way too unforgiving and revs weird, so it's too easy to stall, plus the reverse gear is where the first gear is on most cars... so you think that the thing is about to shoot forward, and instead it jolts backwards and nearly plows into a bunch of brand new SC430's...

Hey Pony, I know what you're talking about with the auto transmission. My mom drives a Mercedes, and it's the same deal, if you floor it off the line, it takes about 10-15 seconds to get up to speed. But, if you ease into the gas, start off with about 1/4 throttle, and gradually increase (you eventually figure out when to floor it), it's got plenty of zip.
My friend just got a 7 series BMW and he has the same deal with his acceleration and the same method works for him.

Yeah, something to me, about buying a really pricey car with a high-power 8 or 12-cylinder engine that churns out in excess of 300 horsepower and not being able to have it on tap... i dunno... i mean you see people who spend big cash on this superior-engineered German technomobile, who get greased by $1500 Camaros, obnoxious Civics with stickers and unpainted body kits, VW's, Maximas...

LOL very nice....
Now all it needs is some Fast and Furious graphics to complete it...
You know what though, now that I come to think of it...
I think Ford at one time either did a Festiva or an Escort, I can't remember but it was some kind of stupidly small car and it had an SVO spoiler on the back. But they built like 20 of these things with Formula One engines in them, and they claimed they could redline at like 16000 RPM and do a 0-60 in 1.9 seconds. Now that sounds kinda iffy to me, but it sure would be fun to come up to a light against one of these asshole in the Corvette who thinks he has something and smoke his ass in a Festiva. If that happened to me I would have to start riding the bus, because I would be too embarrassed to get behind the wheel again...
PonyOne
10-03-2003, 06:40 PM
Yeah, it was the Ford Racing Division in the late 80's, they did a few Festivas up with 8cyl engines that were totally 100% race designed, and had this absurdly large wing on the top... just for the hell of it. I saw the only one in the US up for sale on the net once, he was asking like $80,000... yeah right... may be fast, but it still doesn't bring in the ladies.
The Europe model Escorts can actually be very very cool, they share no visual or mechanical resemblence to the horrid US version. Do an online search for "Ford Escort Cosworth RS" and see what I'm talking about... the full rally spec versions rock.

Pony,
i know what you are saying about the autos, my dad has a BMW 7 series, and it takes a while for it to change. the best auto i have come across was in a nissan skyline '89, a model called the 'passage GT', which ment that its was pretty much a GTSt R32, in the body of a 4 door R21. quite fast, great handling, and everthing else that makes skylines great.
PonyOne
10-05-2003, 11:40 PM
yeah, that's why i'm killing myself trying to get a skyline shipped over here (USA, where they have never been sold before the current model, which is sold here as the Infiniti G35, but no GTR as of yet). I'm looking at a R32 GTR. A GTSt wouldn't be so bad, it's still a skyline, but i'd prefer the 2.5 to the 2.0 and the all wheel drive, all wheel steering is a nice touch...
plus, i can get one for about $7000 shipped, and then spend another few grand getting it legalized, and then resell it for like $20,000. finally get that LP.

I drive a stunning, white 1995 Dodge Caravan. Single sliding door. With an upside down motor in the driver's side window (thus up goes down and down goes up...sort of like Jim Morrison). Mainly, I look like either a soccer mom or a child molester in a big white minivan. Mothers rush their chihldren inside when they see the "Candy mobile" plowing down the street.
I had to be able to afford the Gibson, you know?

I borrow my dad's 96 VW Cabrio- although its a chick car, its still good for gettin chicks (the convertible thing), or at least high school chicks...Oh yea, its a stick too.
When my dad's usin that, the only other thing is my mom's 91 Toyota Previa minivan. Its funny as hell burnin people with that because its so old, but its based loosely on a sports car body (engine in the middle of the body). For accelerating, I floor it, to get the revs up, let up on the gas a little, then floor it again. Works like a charm.
By the way, in no way do I condone street racing. I think its a surefire way for people to either a) do some stupid expensive damage to their cars or b) die.
