View Full Version : Being indespensable and self promotion hesitation

Yep,I play guitar,I'm good at bass and a regular joe shmoe on drums.Ive been hesitant to start whoaring myself to the band positions that are around out of sheer lack of confidence in my ability.Ive observed two types of bands.
1:A band that sits around and doodles, gets no material done and takes music as anything but serious or real.
2:A band that is gigging furiously, has major ego problems(usually the frontman)and come off intimidating even though they dont know what the hell there talking about.
Its tough to explain...
To put it the best way possible...I feel Expendable.
It feels as if being a guitarist comes with little opportunity and that you should feel "privileged" to be "let" into a band.Rock,Metal,Punk and most any type of music is guitar driven...but still the demand is low.
A solution I had was dedicate some time/money to getting bass+drum gear and learn em' till I drop.I would then be able to seemingly always have work.If the band didnt need me anymore,I could give them the finger and move to a cozy drummer position and so on.
I just wanted your thoughts on this odd mode of thought.

Some random thoughts...

It doesn't matter what instrument(s) you play, if you don't enjoy being with the rest of the people in the band.

Specializing means learning more and more about less and less, until you risk knowing everything there is to know, about nothing at all. Learning a little about as many things as you can may tend towards knowing nothing about everything.

Having some knowledge of the other instruments can give you some insight into how they all fit together. Or at least how they should fit together.

I have a respect for bass players, based on their ability to anchor a band without getting all self-centred about it. Flashy lead guitarists are less than a dime a dozen. A solid bass player is someone worth knowing.

Drummers tend to be hard to work with, because of the personality types that drums attract. That and the moronic producers that insist on mixing tracks giving almost half of the total sound level to the drums. The best drummers play their kits as instruments that contribute to the overall sound. The real artists among drummers are rare treasures.

The 'best' guitar players, like any of the best musicians, place the good of the music ahead of gratifying their egos. I'd much rather jam with another rhythm player than spend my time backing up some needy, attention-starved, egocentric wanker. Such 'players' are everywhere, but that doesn't mean I gotta put up with 'em.

Learning to be useful at several positions is a good goal, I think. Ideally, it would allow you to explain how you want the other guys to play something you've written, and help you to understand what they expect from you.

If you know as much as I think you know, then you know enough about what I think, to know that I think you know enough to know what I think about what you know. :)

You may know what I don't know, but not that I don't know it and I can't tell you so you will have to tell me all.
It hurts him to think that she is hurting her by him being hurt to think that she thinks he is hurt by making her
feel guilty at hurting him by her thinking she wants him to want her. Her wants her to want him to get him to want him to get him to want her she pretends.
He tries to make her afraid by not being afraid.(permutations)
You may know what I don't know, but not that I don't know it and I can't tell you so you will have to tell me all.
I get what I deserve. I deserve what I get. I have it so I deserve it. I deserve it for I have it. I get what I deserve. What I deserve - what I deserve what I get.
I have it so I deserve.
He tries to make her afraid by not being afraid.

Ive taken the initiative and am working on gaining strong bass skills.Theres gonna be a lot of blisters along the way.I never plan to change to a "bassist".I'll never forget this guy who said its all about bass and drums...and not guitar.Music(good music anyway)is guitar drivin.

Yep, swapping to bass hurts like hell for the first couple of months (longer scales fatter strings) but you will get used to it!

i went the other way, form bass to guitar, and i found the higher strings (e,B,G) to be quite painful, mainly because they are small and really dig into the finger.
