Love it!
I took a look at your webpage in hopes to find some music stuff there, and I saw your studio. What axe did you use for this song?
Really love the slide and vocals.
On my last mix cd I put "dreaming" on it. Your rocking good!

Coool, the slide was a Fender Mex 72 re-issue Telecaster tuned to an open E through the pod into the D1600.
Im probably going to double track (split) the slide and re-amp one of the tracks using ReValver (Sonar plug-in) to fatten it up a bit.
The other guitar was the PRS also through the POD. I will probably role off a bit of the bottom end of the PRS to add clarity in the mix.
I also want to drop the level of the slide during the vocal bits. I may also try to fatten up the Vox a bit with another plug in.
Pleased to hear Dreaming is getting famous !!!! I’m re-mixing and partially re-recording (bass and drums) my first 4 tunes so watch this space for updates !!
Cheers

Dr. S,
I like it a lot, especially the lyrics and the slide guitar. I was looking for a more pronounced guitar solo somewhere--maybe that's just my preconceived notion of a blues song. And the drums sound a bit . . . canned. Is that a software program? If so, you really can't beat a real flesh and blood person for genuine "feeling" on the drums. And if it is a real person, my apologies. Overall, great song.

I fixed one or two things:
1) Split the slide guitar and re-amped the second track using the SONAR ReValver plugin. This is to thicken the sound a bit !
2) Added compression to the bass and routed it through the Aux 1&2 busses to bring it up in the mix
3) Rolled off some of the low end on the main and backing vocals as well as the rhythm guitar
4) Automated the slide volume slider to back off a bit when the main vocals kick in.
5) Added some compression to the main bus as a mastering effect
and re-posted the song, it is at the same URL...

I originally had another guitar wailing and howling but it just made the sound too busy so I dropped it!

It's really good, but I agree with the previous poster that the drums need to be more varied. The symbol is too loud for my tastes. I would make the bass drum (is there one? if not, add one) louder too.
I also wanted the song to be longer; to jam out for at least a minute.
It sounds really good though, and the ending's perfect. I just realized though, for the vocals, I didn't really sense enough pain in them...They sounded more like Brian Setzer on downers. I don't know if that's what you were going for? It has a nice Squirrel Nut Zippers appeal, but I think it loses some integrity.

Yep you have voiced several nagging doubts I have had for a while.
Im going to:
1) have a go at inserting another 12 bars of slide between the last verse and the outro
2) add some syncopation (and bring ou the kick drum & ride symbol in the mix)
3) replace the vox during the first verse ( I was after a Muddy Waters sound)
4) Add some howling and wailing lead guit during the last verse / outro
good or bad I'll post the result !
Coool beans !

I liked both versions. I like the more pronounced guitar of the second version. Looking forward to the next version.

Cool song Doc! The sound quality is really good, I don't think I can add much of anything that hasn't already been said. Definitely bring up the kick drum. I'd say get it up to where it's around the level (slightly lower) to the snare. The mix definitely lacked that bass & snare rhythm. Pull back a little on the bass guitar to make room for the bass drum, it was a little over-powering. That's my critique on the mix. About the song, my opinion would be to add something between the two vocal parts. Maybe a harmonica or blues guitar lick (even a rock organ, whatever you would want). I just lose attention there cause there's no melodic continuance between the two vocal parts. I just get a visual of a guy with a harmonica jumping in right there, or if you want to be unconventional, go for an accordion or something like that. I think something along that tone would fit sweetly. Bring it in on the right side of the spectrum, there's a huge blank there. Well that's my input. Really good song though. Do you drive down a lot of country roads when you get your ideas?? I just get that impression when I hear your songs, and that’s a compliment. The song has a visual interpretation for the listener. :)

Cheers Dude, Im on it ! I have put down another two guitar lines (an acoustic track (whey down in the mix, not quite a pad but getting their) and also a clean lead line playing fills between the vocals. Sorting out the kick drum needs to be addressed as Imp still a little empty in the bass department. Watch this space !

Hey, Doc, doesn't it bother you that there's a band out there called "Space Hog"?
Just curious.

Oh PANTS!!!! Time to change the old name again, I really liked Space Chickens but it just wont be taken seriously!!!!
How about "The Space Hoppers" like those big orange inflatable things kids used to zoom around on in the early 70s ?
Got it.... Space Hog Hoppers.....cool !!
I can see the art work now, a guy who looks like a space hog face super imposed on top of a space hopper....oh yes coooool ! I love Photoshop !!!!

What's so wrong with Space Chickens? I like how it's plural but there's only one of you. Anyways, [cue shaky hippie voice] it's not about the name, it's about the music, man.

Why is the name changed?

Yep, the new version is better. I meant, why is the name of the SONG changed?
Dr_simon

Well the lyrics are now in there third incarnation and as it was originally called "Down the Mountain" and the first vs talks about climbing the mountain. That didn’t make sense!
So, I thought, well what is the song about?
Struggle, repression, being lied to and coming to terms with the fact that despite the lies you are fed by the media every day, you are only really free to do what you are told (though you may be allowed to grumble about it) .... and that it is difficult to live your life an a decent honest person.
Ok, im off to find me another soap box ! Rant rage r a n t
