I think it (Fatal instincts) sounds a little pretentious. Get something that sounds like a name, not just nouns. My band for instance, our band name is Acherontia, which is the Latin name for a species of moth. Sure, it's far-fetched, but it sounds like an actual name (plus, the moth makes a killer logo;)). If you want scary names, go here:

Here's some names for you...
Da Fart Knockers, 50/50 (based on previous response), SHAT, Maximum Pudding, 64 oz, Punch Buggy, Poop-Tarts, GI Slow, Major Jesus, Girlie Fries.

how about Blowing Bottle Rockets
or Panchas Pilot and the 5 Nail Slam (You might pick up negative publicity for that one though from the church)
When I can think I might post more. (Need more beer..)
Fatal Instincts ain't too bad ... Also try FatallicA . :D
it's not easy picking an ear catchingly original name but there are sure some easy ways of coming up with an uninspired one like 'The' + noun. so a good idea to avoid the definite article although that's not too bad 'Definite Article'.
some of the better names have been nicked from hip books, song lyrics, newspaper headlines, pieces of equipment and adverts. e.g
Steely Dan was.. .ahem.. a 'ladies accessory' from the book 'Naked lunch' by William Burroughs if I'm not mistaken.
Deacon Blue was nicked from a Steely Dan number
Frankie Goes to Hollywood was from a newspaper headline about Ole Blue Eyes.
'Echo' from Echo and the Bunnymen was the original drum machine.
Wasnt Rage Against The Machine taken from an Arthur Koestler book?

Hmmm... what exactly is "Fatal Instincts" supposed to mean? Does that mean that your instincts cause deaths? Because that would be a bad thing, no? Maybe you'd rather want a more positive message, like "Non-Death Inducing Instincts", or "100% Beneficial Instincts"...
One word names are good; Grub's suggestion of stealing a name from somewhere else (song lyrics, etc.) is good too. Radiohead got their name from a Talking Heads song, Pink Floyd was named after two bluesmen (Pink Carruthers and Floyd something).
Just try not to get too serious, or else it'll just backfire on you and make you look like you've got a huge ego and love all your own ideas. (that's a bad thing, btw).

I thought about taking names from movie's or books as you said and the name "steel dragon's" from the band rockstar sounds pretty kool although i do not know if i would be able to use this name or not

Don't even TRY to come up with a kewl band name. They all sound stupid later. Don't name your band with a joke name either, ala "The Goo Goo Dolls". This can come back to haunt you as well.
Name your band THE EXACT SAME NAME as a band you worship...
"Ladies and Gentlemen, We are POISON!"
"Please welcome to the Willies stage: VAN HALEN!"
"Thank you very much Boise! We are THE DIXIE CHICKS!"

Dude that makes no sense at all.
Btw, you might want to consider two tings: Either a name with several words, since most words in the English language are already band names, or something in Latin. Check out some insects or spiders. They always have cool Latin names.

Sorry dudes... I was JUST KIDDING about using a name of a famous band. You would get sued.
Just trying to stir things up...
HOWEVER... If you are trying to get a record deal... YOUR NAME DOES MATTER. I remember talking recently with a VP at Capitol and he was saying how all A & R guys were checking out this band because they had a funny and clever name... ALSO, A & R guys like to brag about bands they have signed and they sure as heck don't want to say some lame name when they are talking about it.
Just my .000000002 cents

ok how about Bitchslap...
Punchdrunk...
or try this..
your first name plus one of the names above
For example...
Jimmy Bitchslap
Dr.Johnny Blender and the stirrups
Boner ( The lead singer could do the whole show with a sock and a paper towel tube sticking out of his zipper. It would get attention just for the shock value alone)
Rollin' Bones
or...
anything with "The" in front of it...
Seems to be the hip thing these days
The Braindead Generation
The wifebeaters
or you could just steal this one from Dweezil Zappa...
Bitch Mallory

Hey bro, IŽm shredding evry day, and I donŽt want to go back to old days, I would be only slower LOL!!
LOL
I think it would be interesting if a new rap-metal band jumped into the scene , with a shredhead guitarist onboard who's soloing the crap out of every song ... I wonder how would we react ?
Keep shredding (and rapping :p ) dude !

Try thumbing your way through Latin and other language dictionaries. For example incubus is Latin 4 nightmares or something along them lines. Biblical texts etc can also hold cool names
like NEPHLAM (taken) for example.

Dudes!!! whats gotten into you. Let me just put it this way RAP SUCKS!!! Its more incompinate jackasses that dont appreciate talent. Rap songs are always about the same old crap. Anyway since we are all on the subject of that so called "music" you guys call rap. Why dont you name your band SnooptallicA, if anyone saw that ICON thing youll know what Im talking about. And about that suggestion on the rap/shred band, I pray that wont happen I already have to hear "you can find me in da club pockets full of bud...Everywhere I go" I hate anything that has to do with rap
