In a nice turn of events since my computer crashed and erased all my cool stuf... I got a new guitar today. I'm a lefty, and I can do all the tricks left handed now, so, I figured... why not concentrate on learning to do all the same stuff right handed?
I already have a really sweet Telecaster, but I don't like the way it feels when I play right handed. I'm used to the Gibson-style layout, where you have two large raised pickups (I often anchor my pinky to the side of one of the pickup surrounds when I'm playing) and an angled neck, rather than the flush pickups and straight neck of the Tele. I can play a Tele just fine left handed, but right handed, I still need that certain feel.
Musicyo.com had a sale on their Kramer Barettas ($200, as opposed to the usual $400), so, I got out my card and ordered one last week. It got fedexed here and it was set up pretty nice. No buzzing anywhere, nice low action, etc. After I tuned it it was perfect.
The guitar itself is nice. I wanted midnight purple, but that color is only available on the Floyd Rose models, and this one's a hardtail, so I got metallic red. The finish is a nice darkish shade, and although it's metallic you can still barely see the woodgrain. The feature I like the most about the guitar is that it's neck-through, plus it's string-through... so it gets unbelievable sustain.
When you pluck it the thing feels alive...I didn't think that a $200 guitar could sound this nice. Up on Harmony Central some old metal guy said that if this thing was made by another company it'd cost $1000 and I can see where he's coming from. If the headstock said Jackson you'd pay 6x as much for the same guitar. It's only been a few hours, but I'd seriously suggest anyone who wants a good hard rock/metal/shred guitar looking into one of these.
It sounds pretty nice with the stock pickups. Not as nice as Gretsch stock p/u's, but then, they are two totally different type of pickups. These are meant for metal, and for that, they'd do very nice. But I also got a DiMarzio Tone Zone, which I'm going to drop in after I run out and buy a soldering iron...
So hairbandrocker, does this mean I'm a real man now...?
Pics to follow.
