Of course, it's all good when you are using an exotic scale or something really hard. But, what's the best thing you do to show off?? You know, to get the girls and stuff.

Sweeping, again.

Slide with a beer bottle down the neck and take a sip when you get past the nut, make it look incidental that music's happening (it'd sound that way if I tried it!)
I saw a guy using his music stand as a slide once and jumping around tables as he played. He kicked ass.
There's always tapping and, if you swap your hands round when you do it people think it's harder for some reason..
There's two handed bending, you bend a bit with one hand and then put the other hand behind your fretting hand and push the string around, you can get 3and a half tone bends that way if the string doesn't break!
What'd really impress ME would be seeing someone bend two or more notes different amounts at the same time, that's a killer!

One of my easier, but stil impressive tricks is to be playing a gig and order a drink while playing. They hand me the drink, which I consume with my right hand, while I play legato with my left hand. It's quite impressive to people that don't know how easy it is.
A funny looking trick that's pretty impressive is to purposefully drop your pick while playing, but make it look like an accident. While bending down to get it, set your guitar on the back of your neck and play legato while reaching for the pick. This basically looks like your guitar and left hand stay stationary, but the rest of your body moves while you are still playing. This is a bit harder to coordinate than the other trick, but still not all that hard. Make sense?

To get girls, I would say play a song they know!!! Thats always a good start.

Slasher hit the nail on the head. Getting a girl is easy... ask her what her favorite song is, then learn it and play it at your next local gig. Before playing it though, say, "This song is dedicated to [insert flavor of the week here]". She'll be head over heels in love with you.

Still I think November Rain. Donīt Cry, Always, Bed Of Roses...you got the idea always work but you should throw in somthing dirty too like Girls Girls Girls by Motley Crue.
That one when you play legato and mute the strings with your right hand above left hand (reversed) looks cool and my bandmates think that Iīm only after to impress folks but what they donīt get is that mute technique gets so much better that way. I like it, cool and useful.

Actually I missed out my party piece, just pick out as many pinch harmonics as you can from the open strings, you can get triads easily (and more extended arps) from just one string. Do what the hell you want with the other hand so long as it's not embarrasing.

Sweeps with added taps and legato. Anything that sounds/looks blurry. Usually makes everyone in the crowd shut up.

Play a solo and solve a Rubics cube at the same time.
That always gets the girls.

Hmmm...
How about play a solo while preparing a dinner for two?
this will get the girls for sure.
and will secure you a well paid career in some circus.

But than again if you overdo it remember that those girls probably donīt know a sh!t about guitarplayng and theyīll probably think that you are just messinī around īcause even if it sounds right they will probably still think that itīs nothing. 3 chord songs can be useful afterall.

When i was younger in cover bands...the girls always loved to hear bon jovi or def leppard.
As far as impressing other guitar players (Most non musicians can give a sh*t...lol at least for me is 8 finger tapping wich I got heavily into after studying with Roy Ashen for a year.

In order to impress on chicks, play stuff like Stairway To Heaven, Godfather, lots of classical pieces and if you can sing, learn Bohemian Rhapody (mama part) on guitar and sing along.
I remember when I tried impress on my cousin who basiclly never heard anything else than Yugoslavian folk music, I played Surfinī With Alien and when I came to the fast tapping part he was like o my god but than when I played other harder parts in the song he still liked the tapping stuff most.
Funny thing is than almost nobody (who donīt know anything about guitar playnī) never gets imoressed by fast alternate picking. I mean among guitar players alternate stuff is HUGE, but I guess that it just isnīt flashy enough.
Back in school days , I used to take my acoustic there , play and sing metallica's "mama said" , "Fade to Black" , songs from Nirvana's unplugged and similar stuff .
Inspite of my "non-arguable" horrible vocal range and overall singing , girls "LOVED" it , and the boys (including myself!!) hated my voice .
But anyway , screw the boys (including myself for sure) , it's the girls who I am (we're) going for :D .
One fact I learned from my humble experience , "most" girls donno crap about real music ! LOL

I think itīs the expression that counts, not the voclas in those situations. Eyesed closed and shakinī head slowly is the killer technique here.
Our you can just watch Bakstreet Boys and Westlife videos. Man, westlife songs are one of the worst I ever heard and they made me laugh. Baby here Baby there, love me here love me there??? Damn man.
Positive thing is that all that boy-band stuff is gettinī out slowly but steadly. Horey!!!
Yeah , I remember that , most girls used to listen to that "Get Down" , "As long as you love me" backstreet buttholes stuff !
They also used to bring discmans to the school , and they get pretty impressed when I instantly figure out some basic guitar riffs from one of these crappy songs.
I wish these kid bands get off soon ... I could roughly take a whole Michael Jackson album than a couple of minutes of kid bands music.
Oh Baby Baby I love yoooou , ooooh yaaah ehhhh ehhh yeeeeeeeeeahhhhh !!! :D

Yogoslavian folk music? *L* stuff like Lepa Brena? She seems never to get old, does she?
however..
Whats impressive also is to play legato stuff on the guitar (even if it is only powerchords) and with the righthand play some sort of solo on a keyboard - it looks realy impressive and it isnt actually that hard to do.

At lest Michael Jackson has written some good music. Those boybands don't even write those crappy songs themselves.

I saw some guy do this in some movie called "Rockstar",about some guy who was in Iron Maiden or something.I dunno if the story is fictitious or is actually based on the life of a Maiden.
Anyway,I was kinda impressed by the trick,so I guess it would work.
I'm not anywhere near as good as many of the folks here(I figure your skill level from the stuff you write-I don't,for instance, know what legato is(don't you f***ing laugh)),but I can play a coupleof songs, stuff by three doors down,Matchbox 20,Alanis,Jewel,like that, and this stuff impresses a lot of people(both boys and girls) who know the songs.

Man I got to see Rockstar again coz when I first saw it I didnīt have a clue who Zakk Wylde was and than later Iīve heard that he was the guitar player. I got to see it again now when I know that itīs him.

Yeah , I like some of his songs , specialy "Give in to me" w/Slash on the lead guitar !
His lyrics is mostly very good too.

EVH plays a cool solo on beat it too!
Yeah, I know dude ... And Jenifer Batten did some cool stuff with him like "Dirty Diana" .
But the best guitar solo I've ever heard in MJ music was "Give in to me" by Slash , this guy adds "a lot" to any music he plays.

Inverting hands and doing legato runs is impresive... Also tapping. But whatever you do, add a "oh my god this is so damn hard and i'm so gifted" expression. That always works as long as you dont over do it.

Someone mentioned buying a drink while playing legato earlier.. I'd just like to say I think it'd be damn funny to give such a guitarist monopoly money, washing tokens and tazs and see how they resolve that kind of dilemma.. Anyone who could swear/fight and play a guitar gets my respect!

I recently discovered I can play behind my head. I was soooo happy. Other stuff I do is play the guitar behind my back and do that inverted hands legato thing someone mentioned earlier. People also like it when I play things in the 12 bar blues?!

Just get a cheap guitar and smash the crap out of it.
u10ajf

That's sacriledge. If you can afford to smash a guitar you can surely better afford to give it to some poor kid who can't afford one.

I never said i would do such a thing, i would never throw, or smash my guitar, it took me months to save up the money to buy it, and Im only 17, so it's very important to me, but I have a squier i wouldnt mind breaking over someones head.
I believe the first one smashed his guitar (on stage on purpose) was Jimi Hendrix ... Everybody else who do that is just immitating him, like we immitate his teeth picking , back playing , etc.

Townshend was actually the first, I think, but he did it by accident when he snapped his guitar's headstock on the cieling. He though, "Meh," and kept smashing it. The crowd liked it, so he kept on doing it at shows.
Most non-guitarists Ive known, including all ladeez bar one, couldn't tell the difference between Joe Satch/Steve Vai and some 3-chord merchant in bands like The Hives/Strokes/White Stripes etc. I played 'Crystal Planet' t'other day to the wife and she had to ask whether JS was a good player? So, my advice is if you wanna lay some groupies dont bother with Malmsteenish sweeping. A low slung guitar at thigh level Slash-like, a ciggy in the headstock Eddie VH stylee and handily placed bottle of JD and wham bam thank you mam. It's all in the attitude.
Dejan Sajinovic
04-23-2003, 03:43 PM
Thatīs pretty true BUT, if you can show off like Malmsteen not only by using phenomenal technique but to do it all with an amazing style, than the 75% of the battle is won.
PS. I think that players like Vai, Yngwie, Wylde, Becker... had cooler stage show than Slash had/have.
Don't forget Michael Angelo ... Playing two guitars simultaneously from above the fretboard is seriously impressive !
