How do you go about it with a rack?

I was thinking about just getting a preamp (VHT GP3 Valvulator) and a power amp (VHT 2/50/2), and then a rack to put them in. How do you know it will fit? Do you buy separate shelves? Is 19" standard size?

Cool. Are there any advantages to having a separate preamp/power amp rack setup as opposed to a regular stack or halfstack? Other than the obvious opportunity to assemble your rig piece-by piece, I mean.

What kind of cables do you use between the preamp and the power amp? I know you use speaker cables from the power amp to the speaker, but does that apply to preamp-to-power amp?
