Somebody has been spidering guitar tricks so they can have a copy of all the tricks on their hard drive. Today this spider program caused a long outage. Guitar Tricks was down for several hours (it is still down as I write this) and our ISP threatened to boot us off.

Whoever is doing this, please STOP. If this doesn't stop, we may have to do a lot of unpleasant things, like charge a membership fee or close down the site. This is very serious.

If you want a copy of the tricks, email me and I will help you.

Jon

A spider is a program designed to collect a group of information quickly at one time. This guy didn't want to go through each page and download them individually, so he made a program that grabs all the mp3's in a certain subdirectory at once. It overloads the server because it can't handle the activity. The ISP is pissed because their server is getting messed up.

ekstatis16 has it right. I doubt it is somebody who posts to the forum.

It could be a bootlegger or just somebody who wants his own copy.

yo jonathan, are they trying to like make a comprehensive disk and bootleg it or something outta everybody's contributions.

bas-*d...it'll suck if you've gotta charge a fee...A lot of us (well, me) aren't old enough to have a decent amount of money for that kinda stuff, or the typical means of payin' for it (cards, bank accounts...)
Grrrr!!!!....Stop!

Is that why this site went from 1600 tricks to 1000?

no, there all still there(i think). maybe Jon thought i didn't look good to have 1547. it's better to have a rounded number i guess.

Isn't there any way you can prevent the spidering?

I had to make changes to make this site more efficient. Those changes included removing the main trick counter. I had too many little counters and things running in a real ineffecient manner. In the next few months, I plan to rewrite Guitar Tricks and add a lot better categorization features and some other stuff that I think you will really like. When I do, I will try to add these features back in a more efficient manner.

I looked at our server logs, and it seems that the spider guy was just someone trying to download a copy for himself. I don't think he really meant any harm.

Is this still going on or has the spidering stopped?
