Buy new amp need suggestions

Here's the situation:

Price range: $300-$400
Solid State Only, please
Wattage: 30-65
Style of music: Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Mellow
Clean: Bright, well defined
OD: Warm with singing leads

Right now I have a fender 15r and while I love the fender clean the distortion is raspy and raw like a chainsaw. I need an amp that's for practice in the bedroom and playing with friends.

Thanks man! I tested the MG50 and 100 out and they both sounded really good. I also tried out the Fender Deluxe 90 and while the clean was beautiful... again the distortion did nothing for me.

I have a question about the MG's. I noticed the MG30 had an open back, what difference does that make in sound? And is it possible to open the back of the MG50. Or maybe put a "12 speaker in the MG30?

I've got a Peavey Bandit 112 trans tube - picked it up new for 400 bucks - 80watts of go (bumps to a full 100 when driving a cab), 2 channel w/footswitch, tube emulation (so's it sounds purdy and mean) she can keep up with a drum set.

Not bad bang for the buck.

Another vote for Peavey here... I'm having a solid state Fender myself and I think I know what you mean and what you're looking for.
I'm also using a multi-effects processor so the Fender's great for my needs. Also, if metal is your main target, check out the new Hughes&Kettner line.

Take a look at the Gallien-Krueger Backline 112 (http://www.gallien.com/PRODUCTS/COMBOS/Backline_112/Backline_112.htm). At 100 Watts, it has more power than you had inmind, but it gives you consistent sound at any volume, so you don't have to crank it up to get the sound you want. And it has lots of provision for patching in external effects, plus some unusual features like the heavy steel grill in front of the speaker (bulletproof!), and the cabinet that allows you tilt it back without the need for something to prop it up. I have this model's predecessor, the Backline 100, so I'm pretty sure you'll like the Backline 112.

Because it look likes it. You say that like its a bad thing! One of the most revered guitar amps of all time is the blackface Fender Bassman!

There are several speaker combinations to choose from. Try it. You'll like it.
