it just takes practise i guess. i can play chords and they sound pretty good but it did take a while. you just have to try different techniques i guess.

I use the round edge of the pick, and I hold
the pick with two fingers (otherwise I hold it with 3),
plus I hold the pick so gently that I almost drop it.
I only do this when I'm playing very smooth, calm songs.
Otherwise I hold the pick as usual but I use the round edge
to get a smoother sound.
The sound of a pick strum will always be different from finger strumming .
Here are my suggestions for you :
1- Use finger style exclusively like Knopfler (Dire Straits).
2- Pick only (and hybrid picking) like most people do .
3- Combine both with finger style for strumming and pick for the leads.

Try using different picks, varying the size and veneer. Some picks seem to "catch" on the strings, and may be intended for note-picking, while others are more slick and tend to glide over the strings more smoothly, and are probably intended for strumming chords. Try using a thinner pick.
Good luck

mc9mm, I thought you were nuts using the round edge, but Holy s**t, it makes quite the difference. And it does have a much smoother sound.
