palm-muting... some help here?

I'm having alittle bit of trouble doing palm muting... anyone have any techniques that could help me? I had some person i know show me how to do it, but i'm not even sure if they play guitar...

Rest your palm on the strings, and play as usual.
Closer to the bridge = less muting
Further away from the bridge = more muting

Dont do it do far from the bridge, all you'll get are big muted stabbing sounds. Thats an altogether different technique.
