I have just recently come back from a bad wrist injury which means I can at last start to play guitar as I wanted to do the past 2 years:
Anyway. Would anyone out there please advice me on a good electric guitar for a beginner that is less then £250

They're are a wide range of guitars for under 250. Squier, Epiphone, and Ibanez. If your just a beginner I would first look for a guitar that stays in tune and plays well.
All guitars are different, so it's best to try out quite a few until you find the one that you feel sounds the best. Just don't buy a sh*tty one out of a sears catalog!

i advice you to begin with clasic or acoustic guitar before going on with elec. it would be easier to play the elec. after playing clasic and you can decide if you like it before wasting money.
my first elec. was squir but try to find your own style.

make it about $300(US) and call it close enough ;)
Check out Jackson, ESP or Ibanez. They make decent playable low prized guitars.

I'd personally get a steel string accustic rather than a classical (if you intend on playing anything other than classical music). Good makes of budget guitars include yamaha, fender, encore, etc..(though a name never guarantees a good guitar) It'd be helpful if you could get a friend or somebody who knows about guitars to help.
Without getting technical a couple of things look for are how far you have to press down the strings to reach the fret board (the action)- usually the closer the strings are the earier it is to play, how comfortable or bulky the neck feels, look for any signs of poor workmanship like blobs of glue, listen to how the guitar sounds etc... For £250 you should be able to get a guitar that you can plug in which may become useful later on ($300 is a bit misleading cause guitars are more expensive in the UK and you get a lot less for your money).
Another thing that you could do is look up reviews on a guitar on the web (as long as you take what people say with a some scepticism) e.g.
http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data4/
O and one last thing- always see if you can get some money of the price of the guitar cause they usually will (esp if you offer to pay in cash) and its worth asking for any extras e.g a strap, case, and plectrums.
Hope that helps.

I have bought my mates old sttel string acoutic off him for £25 quid with a case and satnd, and am enjoying every minute of it, especially trying to learn to play some other new stuff, such as the simpler Nirvana riffs. Thanks for everything everyone.

hey everyone,
i recommend getting an Epiphone or Squier for a good cheap beginner guitar. they have a little less quality then a real Gibson or Fender but they are terrific beginner guitars. just any relatively good guitar company that doesn't charge too much. my first guitar was a Samick Strat and it is just as good as my friends Squier Strat, but of course i now have an Ibanez RG421 that can kick his ass.
but anyway, Epiphone or Squier is good but any guitar that feels good and easy to play is a great start.
