I'm totally unexperienced in recording music with the computer. Must I use a special plug-in for the guitar? Or should I put a mic in front of my amp? I know editing files, but I haven't recorded any of my own yet. Thanks for your help. Tobias

You can get a fairly decent sound just using a multi effects pedal with a direct line into your stereo system. To warm up that cheezy fuzz sound use a Cabinetulator in-line to simulate the sound of a real amp & to record, hang your computer mic in front of one of the speakers.

Before I got my Mesa/Boogie Caliber 50 amp
I just inserted to chord from my guitar into
the line-in on my soundcard and then did some
equalizer+reverb in the recording program.
But now I put the line-out of the amp to the line-in of the soundcard. I would use a mic
but the one I have got broken! http://www.guitarforums.com/gtubb/frown.gif

I used to just plug my guitar into the mic jack on my laptop.

I use a Korg Pandora between my guitar and the soundcard mic jack (266 laptop/ 333 desktop with standard Ensoniq), Or my Fender Chorus amp with an adapter on the line out. The only problem with the amp is that I have to turn it way down or it clips (even with record volume way down)... but I like the recorded sound of the amp way better than the double-digitized sound of the fx processor di ...Maybe I'm delusional.
What do you use to edit? What do you use to record?
Say... is there anything available for deriving notation from .wav files? There is a lot of stuff that will print music from midi, but I can't seem to find anything that does the same for .wav

Digital Ear, I tried transcribe a guitarpart using it once.
It's a wav to midi converter,.. a bit odd program but it works.

Thanks Peter, I down loaded the trial version of Digital Ear, and it looks like a very useful program.
