Jazz help

hey,

I have just taken a liking in jazz and i am quite interested in playing some. in the past i have been mainly shred and ****, and i just want to broaden the spectrum. here is my question:
What scales should I use? Over what chords? Any particular books or theory tools you reccomend? any help would be nice

Do me a favor and check our http://www.truefire.com/ You can go into a music section and order a CD called #1 Jazz Study program. Comes with audio tracks (mp3's) and a teacher to explain everything...master teachers that write the lessons in GP and stuff. It also has all the tab for everything! It's an awesome tool....costs about 24 bucks.

but ive been into for almost a year now...me personally i dont rely on books and **** like that...i rely on my ear

just listen to allll types of jazz...fusion is tres bein!.. **** like tribal tech..scott henderson is brilliant.. lotsa alan holdsworth...even go way back in the day with wes montgomery...and dont just listen to guitar jazz...jazz is a HUGE world grrrreat ideas

very true, listening to jazz will make you halfway there, but it takes years.

Is jazz hard to play. Also is it faster than shred. I know there are some wicked chord all right but how about solos?

It can be the most extreme music there is.
Shawn lane is the fastest guitarist on this planet, and his music is closer to jazz than to anything else.
Allan Holdsworth plays amazingly difficult voicings, and his solos have inspired legions of players.
Even though they don't sound like anything close to shred, try playing some Joe Pass' arrangements and you'll see that they are some of the most difficult pieces ever written on the guitar.
