I was in the music store Saturday and seen this guitar for 395.00. It looks like a LP but it's called the paul. The guy said it would be worth a lot more had the neck not been repaired. He said Gibson only made them from 78 to early 80s. This one is not painted and pretty plain.

Well Epiphone just makes the same guitars as Gibson, just in a different country.

Locomotive,

can you like the guitar to any other type of more mainstream Les Paul? I.E, is it set neck or bolt on? One pickup or two? P90 or humbucker? archtop or flat top? bound or not? etc.

The downside to a guitar that has had a neck repair is that, esentially, your guitar is now made out of three pieces of wood, rather than two, so tone has to do another transfer to another part of the instrument. Some guitars you notice, some you don't... the best way to figure it out, is to pick it up and play it, plugged and unplugged.

It says Gibson on the head stock and made in USA on the back. 2 pickups, arch top and it has basically the same type body of an LP. I looked it up and all I found was that it was a discontinued model and it was made to be a no frills affordable guitar for lp fans. I was interested in it as a collector because they only made so many and you don't see them that often.

Original The Paul (http://www.guitarmuseumonline.com/04_les_paul/model10/02.htm)

That's the early version. I've got a late 90s one, which is like this in name only...they [both] seem to be fine guitars...and I recall that someone else here has one of the originals too.

Probably ($395 =about £250) it's not much to pay for a Gibson make sure you play it [unplugged and plugged in] for a long time though.

I doubt if it has much of a collectability value, who knows in 10 yrs?. Make a first offer that's ridiculously low if he takes it,say you'll think about it and run,not walk, out of the store.

I'd be wary of buying a repaired Gibson, but, that's just me.
Considering what you can get for $500 in the US (faded SGs,etc) it don't seem to be THAT much of a bargain.

No, I think that as long as it was a really, really good repair job, it may be a good deal still. The most important thing is to try it out.

Again, it could be that that break and repair just totally did in the guitar's sustain and resonance, as well as some of the actual tone itself.

You may want to check out http://www.samash.com or another online megaretailer, sometimes they have some really, really killer deals on Gibsons... once last year they had a Studio LP w/the same type of pickups found in SG's for $599; that's a good 75% off list. But again, try it, see if you like it, and go from there.
