when i first learned about scales and i thought i would be tearing up and down the fretboard in no time. i was wrong... can anybody offer any suggestions that might make my soloing a little easier? Thanks.

Dude. I myself am not that good at soloing. But I was a helluva lot worse than I am now.
just sit and practice. Try just going up and down scales. Maybe from the A major to the dorian in A ( which is B )to the Phrgyian in A ( which is C# ) etc
It will work.but never fast enough

Dont worry, speed will come with time as your hands become stronger.
If you want you can use a metronome, something which really helps me when I practice, and make up some speed excersises or something. They dont have to follow a fancy scale, they could just be little chromatic licks.
I was stuck learning how to solo, and before I know it I had come up with dozens of different excercises. Now I can tap and everything.
One other thing you might try are the columns in magazines like Guitar World. Sometimes all those big guitarists will show you speed excercises and stuff like that.
