Hi. I'm new. I'd like to learn lead guitar but I don't actually have an electric guitar that works at the moment.

dyou mean the electrics dont work?
You can still learn with the basic guitar once it has 6 strings. Or an acoustic.
i've been learning the guitar for nearly 6 years now... but i sure wish i had an electric guitar that, well, worked. i have an acoustic guitar as well though. the problem with my electric is that it's cheap and badly built - the strings don't tune properly and i had a look at all the things you're meant to check for that (like intonation).

When i first started i only had an old classical guitar which even a new set of strings wouldnt make decent. My solution was get a weekend job and eventually save enough cash to buy a cheep squier strat....which i still have and its cool :) If u've been learning for 6 years i think you've probably earnt yourself the right to a decent guitar....and it will make a differece :) If you cant afford a new guitar get a friend who's got one so u can have a couple of hours a week quality practice time...thats what i did whilst saving up cash.

Get yourself an inexpensive electric guitar. Yamaha, Squire, Danelectro, Epiphone, Ibanez to name a few, all have ok new guitars for under 200 bucks. Or look for a used one that's not ready for the wood pile. If you do get one, have someone who knows what they're doing set it up for you. I would suggest low action and extra light strings (.009-.042). Also make sure the intonation is right. One more thing. You will need to get an amplifier! There are few things that are more useless than a electric guitar that you can't hear.
Learning to play lead guitar also depends on how ambitious you are. Most lead players I know (myself included) are usually pretty ambitious people and all of them have some sort of ego. So get a good cheap axe, an amp, an ego and your on your way. Good luck.
