Is it possible to pick THE BEST guitarist ever? Starting with Jimi Hendrix, Robby Krieger of The Doors, Jimmy Page of Zeppelin, or Eddie Van Halen, ect.?

it's all a matter of opinion, so no.

i still can't believe Michael Jackson's "Thriller" wins every cool video competition. Has anybody seen the video to NIN's "The Perfect Drug?"

Yeah, the way that they had those strobes set up was something else. The entire video was based on the bizzare picture books by Edward Gorey (i love that guy).

IMHO, that is the video by which all others should be judged.

Of course you can pick the best guitarist.
Its pretty easy.
You just gather every guitarplayer in the world and measure their knowledge in every technique
available, all the scales, their speed, their ability
to make their own music, etc etc etc etc etc.
Then you have to figure out whats most important;
for example in classical music speed and scales are often important. After you've ranked all those different
things in every style of music in the world, you can
start creating a scoring-system.
Then you must look at all the guitarists different styles, how original they are, how "correct" they are (visit your local music-university for help) and so on.
Then there are about 1326 additional things you have to consider, and then you can start measuring.
OK its hard, but its not impossible.
It will probably cost money to be able to find out how to bring some of the guitarists back to life, but you can probably get some sponsors.
Tell me when you have got a winner, I want to know
who it is.
Good luck!

On a technical baised...then I suppose it is possible...How fast they can play notes, how accurate, etc.
However, of a musicial biased...I wouldn't say so...since no two people feel the same thing for a piece of music, how can you say one is better - "One man's gold is anothers quartz" (or however that may go...) The best guitarist is probably someone who can envoke all sorts of feeling and emotions from their playing...For some, it's Eric Clapton, other's it Stevie Ray Vaughn, some people go all mushy over Yngwie!...There's just no way to say (on what really matters) who's best...(IMHO!) Who care's how many notes you can play? "If you can't whistle the tune, it don't mean s**t"....
Just my two pennies worth...
