Hey,
I like the style of Yngwie, and I was wondering, because I have heard somewhere that (not to take anything away from his ability, at all, the man is insane!) he uses thin strings. I myself use gague 9's, and a heavy pick. I was just wondering if the guys that really move, like Malmsteen, use meduim picks perhaps, or maybe thinner strings. Again, not taking anything away from 'em, just curious. Thanks for reading,
Cliff

Have You Been Drinking??
Yes I Have, Ive Been Drinking From the Well Of Eternal Sadness.
Last time I heard he was using Dunlop Medium Nylon picks, and D'addario strings.
The thing is he uses what he calls a "hybrid" set of strings.
Meaning they aren't a set that comes stock.
I know that the high E is a 10 and the low E is a 46, not sure what the others are though.
It will say if you go to his official site .
Hope it helps and welcome!

Just so you know, while most shredders use light strings, and it may make it easier, its not a necessity. There are jazz guitarrists who have the kind of speed that yngwie does who use 12s or 13s. Check out Jimmy Bruno. He doesn't play fast much though, just in certain spots, he's quite tasteful with his speed.
I play 12s, the tone is a lot warmer than 10s or 9s, to me at least.

I'd say that most shredders do use extra light strings. But I've never found much difference in string size...I can do on a set of 11s what I do on 10s (I haven't touched 9s in years so I don't know what that would be liek). But picks are a world of difference to me. For shredding I like 2 and 3mm Stubby from Dunlop or anything that is heavy, small, and very sharp.

On the Play loud video Yngwie said:
"I use very light strings, 008! And a very thick plectrum, 2mm."

Thanks for all the help guys, I've been dying to get the Play Loud video. I think I'll screw around with medium picks, just see what feels best. I'll have to check out Jimmy Bruno too, he sounds interesting. See you on the board, later

Its my experience that for shredding, something has got to give a little...thin strings/w a heavy pick or heavier strings/w thinner pick. I use 9s on my shred guitars and 10s on my blues guitars; both with pointed a 1.5mm pick. Ive heard Yngwie uses 8 or 9 guage strings with a heavy pick. He also has one of his guitar techs "pre-stretch" his strings out in case you are wondering how those 50s fenders he plays stay in tune from his extreme vibrato
and heavy use of the non-locking vintage trem bar.
