Well, you sound desperate, so I'll help...
Tapping involves you using you picking hand (in most case the right) in order to hammer on to the string...One tip I can give you is to use your index finger (sometimes named your f*ck-off finger), this means you don't have to disguard your plectrum in order to hit the string...
Basically all you do is, instead of picking the string, you hammer on (thus making it a fretted note) and then pull off...
e.g.
e-T12--p4-h7---T12--p4-h7---
T = Tap with righthand finger (asuming your right handed)
p = Pull off
h = Hammer on
There's a very quick run through...just drop me a line if you need anymore help...Check out one of the hosts too, I forget which one though...Think Schmange did some basic tapping licks before going on to the REALLY hard stuff (all fingers)

how do you make it louder or do you just turn up the volume on your amp?

Hey, Making your tapping louder just takes time. To make the sound louder to you need to "tap" harder (from what i've seen so far). Try to tap fairly hard to get a clear sound and still able to make it and the other notes about the same volume. Schmange has a bunch of good tapping exercises that can help you. I think i may have one or two simple tapping techniques posted.
