Step 1:
make sure anyone who will say anything nay of what you feel like doing is out of hearing distance. Shut off your TV, close the blinds take off your shirt, and dim the lights. It helps me to have a small parrot on my shoulder.

Step 2:
plug in your guitar and any effects you are using to your amp (obviously not necessary if you play an acoustic). Ply around w/settings and volumes until it sounds cool to you.

Step 3: start wailing, doing whatever comes to mind, carefully watching the fretboard so that when you do something that sounds good, you know how it was that you did it.

Think of it as taking a snapshot of an emotion and carefully stdying it, whilst still letting it retain its original menaing.

Step 4: I don't know!!! It's different from person to person. Remember: your guitar is an extension of you. Just like if you're happy, you may use your legs to walk, run, dance, kick, etc, and if anyone says that you're showing your happiness incorectly, they're the wrong one. All that was how I usually practice, but that doesn't mean everything. You just gotta let loose.

And hey, when I don't play for 18 hours it takes me a few to get back in the mood... so you just gotta be patient. The feeling will return.

favourite riff or chord sequence and break it down.. just change between two different notes[chords] in different ways and then build it up back to it's full phrasing, play it distorted, play it clean, play it mean, play it wimpy.

Play it while you are concentrating intensely on it and play it when you are not thinking about it and then listen to how it comes out.

Learn that sucker unitl you're sick of it then go away and mess about with the guitar or have a coffee or something. then go back to the riff.

This helps me.

Remember that some days everybody sucks at gtr and some days you can fly.

Try not to beat yourself up about missed timings, etc. If you ain't playing with anyone else then all you have to please is you.

Ponyone's Step 3 is an excellent suggestion.

cheers.
