I have been plaing for 1/2 a year, and
all I am able to play i learned either from
guitartricks or from tabulatures I've found
on the internet. I have learned a lot of
tricks,riffs,chords and scales by reading
tabulature BUT i've never figured out what
this palm muting is. I need urgent help!
It drives me crazy reading tabs without
knowing what palm muting is....

Palm muting:
put your left hand palm at the bridge and then let you hand lie against the strings.
experiment with the following idea: play an open e-string. if you palm mute it, the note won't ring out, it'll die because you're muting it with the palm.
that's my two cents... / magnus

If you're right-handed, you want to rest your right hand just in front of the bridge, like Magnus said. If you want a lot of muting, move your hand away from the brigde slightly, and move it the other way for less muting. It takes experimentation on your own to develop a comfortable technique. But once you get it down, you'll be playing those thick & chunky crunchy riffs like there's no tomorrow. Palm muting is also good for keeping strings quiet when you aren't using them.

Dude your talking about string muting, string muting is where you use your left hand to mute strings on the neck. Palm muting is where you use your right hand next to the briged to mute the strings, ok I made that sound more complicated...

Maybe I can clear this up better than last time.. String muting is where you hold you left hand over the neck, just touching the strings, not holding them down. Palm muting, is where you put your palm (Ie. Palm Muting)
a lil before the briged. Basicly the same thing but to diffent sounds. As for you panterawannab I mean come on he just asked a ? to better his playing, and you bite his head off. Thats not cool man...

No offense man, but I think panterawannab was just being a smart-ass ('scuse the language).
