Hi guys,
Recently I realized that when I'm playing fast phrases on single notes (not bending) I sometimes do this vibrato which is kinda similar to Clapton's, except I don't move the thumb off the neck. Is this wrong?
P.S. I normally use the standard blues/rock vibrato

Does not sound wrong to me. I keep my thumb on the neck when I do vibrato. If it sounds good to you keep doing what you are doing!

My piece of advice: record yourself, listen back, and if it sounds good, it is good! There are as many different types of vibrato as there are guitar players, and you have to find the way that works best for you :).

Dead on! Recording yourself is one of the best things you can do to improve your technic as you are concentrating only on what you are listening as opouse to be concentrated on playing.

+1!
Practice getting your vibrato in-time with the metronome too. Start off slow (60Bpm) and do quarter notes-strictly in time. Move it up to 8th notes, 16ths...all the while keeping it in time. It really pays to work on your slow, wide vibrato. Sounds very expressive too.
Listen to other players. Mimic their vibrato and try out vocal phrases and use vocal style vibrato too!

yea, practicing bent-wrist vibrato has improved my vibrato skills literally through the roof man. that is where you bend up instead of down. Up and down, slow and wide, slow and wide, and keep at it, eventually you'll be like "holy crap, that sounds cool" :P
