View Full Version : Pull offs down a scale

Is there a good exercise to help me get better at going down in a scale. I can go up using hammer on's some what quickly but if I try to go back down I just can seem to get my index finger in the right place to accept the pull off. If I bar the entire fret I can do it fine. I guess im just wondering if there is some tip to do it better that I might not have considered. I hope my explanation is sufficient. Thank you.

I would just advise you to go as slowly as you need to, in order to get the note out properly.
One more advise, don't practice hammer-ons more than pull-offs (im not saying that you have done that, but it sounds like it). pull-offs are a bit more tricky to get down.
hope that helps

I believe some just had a remark abpout pull offs.. Something to the effect of catching with your finger nail.. I'm no expert on that, but it helped me do a better pull off. Also make sure you suffient volume..

Me Too, I just practice pull off's till I catch up with the hammer on's, then slow the whole process down till it's even. Help's me anyways

I never really worked on Hammer ons and pull offs untill I was able to clearly pick the notes at what I call a fast tempo. For example Paul Gilbert has no trouble actually picking each note at High speed... once I reached that point hammer ons , pull offs were not that hard to apply.it kinda fell into place tho I'm still no speed demon.
does that make any sense?

I suggest you to see the tutorial on Mark Knopfler done by HP.
Knopfler uses a lot of hammers and pulls when he plays, forget his handpick and do exercise on his way to play the scales.

I use the spider exercises with hammer on and pull offs for a practice form
