go to the music shop and buy a wide variety of picks and try them out. find one you like
why are you so obsessed with technical stuff? play for the love of playing. IMHO of course.

Satriani uses the most common picks there is, just like VAI, they are so normal it's ridiculous (I own several picks by those two, that's why I know)
I have used lots of different picks over the years, from heavy, light, stubby, jazz 3, wooden, plastic, bone, triangle shaped, heart shaped, oversized, etc. And let me tell you, they DO make a big difference in your sound. But you can get ANY sound from ANY pick, it's a matter of touch and technique. Just choose the one that you feel comfortable with...

Exactly. I know all kinds of insanely good guitarists and they use no set type of pick... unless the 'set type of pick' happens to be their 'favorite type.' Use what's comfortable; that's what makes it the best.

I use fairly heavy Dunlop Tortex picks myself for most guitar stuff and no pick at all for bass. It's what works for me, so it's what I do.

I use Dunlop 0.60 mm.

This is really thin but I feel more confortable with these than other picks.

accoustic stuff - i use about a .6 (dunlop)
electric - maybe a .75 or so (dunlop). i used to use gibson mediums, but i like the grip on the dunlops. i keep shi+loads of picks around because some days i like to experiment.

I've always fantasized about having my own personalized picks, but you have to buy 500 of them. Think about it, they might be the same price as store ones, since you get them in bulk, but with your NAME on them...

These guys have already answered part of your question, use the one that feels the best for ya. The other part, which type of pick do the pros use depend on the style of music they play. In my knowledge, basically hard rock to metal, and some blues, they (almost) always use either heavy of extra heavy gauges. I even read in guitar player that Yngwie uses only Fender's Extra Heavy to play his guitar...
I believe in the philosophy of going with the experience, therefore if these guys use the heavy gauges to play, I'll use them also...

as a general rule of thumb (no pun intended), here are some "pick" guidelines:

Heavier Picks give you a more "positive" attack, meaning the "feedback" from the picking action is more pronounced. But they tend to have a mellower tone.

Light picks have less "feedback" since the pick is doing most of the work during the picking action. They give a more staccato sound.

Light picks of course are excellent for strumming and syncopated rhythms as you can "change directions" quicker.

Jazz or Pointed picks are best for speed as the string makes contact with a very small area of the pick and therefore can 'release' quicker, than a rounded , traditional tip, where the string contacts a greater surface area. And you generally get the best articulation from pointed picks.

But the BEST rule is ; use what ever is most comfortable, Guys like Yngwie use a VERY thick Plectrum whereas guys like Eddie Van Halen use light picks,Billy Gibbons and Brian May use coins, (a Shilling and a Peso respectively), George Lynch has been known to use a round washer, and razor blade (!!) and Mark Knopfler uses no pick There is really no "Rule" per se.

Just Practice HARD that's all :-)

Actually even Heavier!! He uses a dunlop 1.5mm, I have one at home, and the thing is like a stone, no 'flex' at all

A really good plectrum is Jazz III by Dunlop. I'm very comfortable with and that's the one that Petrucci use. But I also know some guitarists, that can't play with this plec cause it is a bit smaller.

Does anyone know if you can still buy Gorilla Snot? remember that stuff? you put it on your pick and it would prevent slippage, the more you would sweat the stickier it would get , but it never came off on your hands, clothes, or guitar. Is it still out there? or is there something similar?

why would you want it? you cant hold a goddamn pick? lol you dont need it.

only thing thats for is glueing your friends feet to the floor :)
