I just broke out of the typical fingering box for the major and minor scales and moved onto the three notes per string version of the two. It's not a big deal, but I'd like to know what finger you guys use to fret the 7th fret when playing 5-7-9 (A major). I find that when I'm descending, my middle finger does it, but when ascending it's the one next to the pinky. Again, I dont' think its a huge deal but I just don't want to develop a bad habit.

I think you're right, it's no big deal. Personally I use 1 2 4 (First, Index, Pinky) just because it's much easier...I remember reading some where that the guy for AC/DC (I think it was him) uses 1, 3, 4...it's all a question of what's comfortable, so long as it sounds okay and doesn't cause you excess pain (there's bound to be discomfort at first, if it continues, you're doin' something wrong...)
What about the other here?!...How do you prefer to do this?

I Use 1-2-4 (first index and pinkey). I Have A Book About Kirk Hammet And He Says He Uses 1-2-4. But I Think Whatever Is Comfortable for you is best. Playing the guitar is supposed to be fun not painful!

Thanks guys. I'm still using 1-2-4 while descending and 1-3-4 while ascending, I guess because I can't stretch the entire distance and need a tiny slide towards the last note, and the finger closest to the slide direction takes charge.

Just a little FYI. Your first and index are the same finger...

When I practice runs for warmups etc, I use the most difficult and awkward fingering I can (a little tip from Rusty Cooley). eg 1-3-4 finger over 5-7-9 or 1-7-10 frets.

When it comes to playing it "for real" though, it all depends on what is most comfortable. That all depends on:

1) The fingering of the previous notes and the best economy of movement to get to the next shape...

2) The next shape and the economy of movement it will take to get there from the current fingering...

3) ...most of all, whatever fingering allows you to play accurately and cleanly... at warpspeed!! ;-)
