You seem to be experiencing similar frustrations to what I do from time to time. How to gauge my progress??

Getting thru GF 1 & 2 will be different for everyone depending on previous experience, natural ability, and time spent each day (and even days per week).

Because of the vast amount of information even in the fundamentals courses you could potentially spend a huge amount of time on them. I was a returning player who never really learned that much before but was able to do basic chords. It took me roughly 3-4 months to go through Fund 1 & 2.

There comes a point though when you've just got to push on or you'll dwell too long. Don't forget the beauty of this site is that you can go back any time you want to a topic you might have skimmed over the first time, chances are it'll mean more to you and be easier to absorb the 2nd time. You'll soon know if you've pushed on too fast - that's the time to eat humble pie and go back a few steps! But if you're picking it up well don't ruin the flow as going too slow can be demoralising if you're a quick learner.

Hope this helps, just ones man's view on a vast subject. :)

It seems evident to me DR that you are going through fundamentals 1 & 2 far too fast. One week for fundamentals 1 is nowhere near long enough! It's obvious you don't "understand it all" as you say because of the number of questions you've posted on Christopher Schlegels forum (22 posts in 5 days)! Give the man a break!

You are giving the impression that you're finding the lessons easy. In your reply to a post on teaching a beginner (http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31216 )you say - "well, i began 2 weeks ago and am now up to half way through fundamentals 2 without any troubles. i do this about an hour a day if that."

I feel this is a case of too many questions too soon. It's only when you have some knowledge that you know what questions to ask and until then you're liable to waste the time of the instructer(s). If you follow the lessons carefully you will surely pick up all you need to know, just like any other new starter.

It's time to study those lessons carefully and stop expecting Christopher to to repeat over and over and over what he's already put into his VERY GOOD LESSONS.

In answering the question, to be blunt, you shouldn't be 'timing' your progress. It's not a race. It is the ability to play. While it's possible to 'get through' the lessons in short order, how much did you retain? How much can you replicate in your playing now without having to refer to the lessons? If you were to be in a conversation with someone and they were talking about a certain mode, would you be able to not only understand the overall idea but be able to understand how to apply it?

The point being is that, I don't think, learning the basis for playing is something that you 'get through' in as much as you use it for the basis from which you grow and refer back to it regularly.

Folks that've seen me around here enough can ignore this but...I've been playing for 25+yrs off and on, taught a bit in my years and was a shredder in my younger days. I came here to grow some in my playing and still find that the first three chapters of Fund2 worth a review.

These things a building blocks and something that isn't really about how fast or slow you get through them but a matter of how integral these ideas and skills build in to your playing.

i think i understand most of it, but my only trouble area is with finding chords and also scales. like, where do all scales begin? i know where a minor, c major and c minor start, but others i dont know (i dont think theyve been taught so far). Also, i dont understand how you can go back on scales and use notes on the upper strings as chris does in his videos. apart from that, everything is nice and understandable, so what i intend to do is go back and watch some of the more difficult videos a few more times. best of luck !
