Funk: on the guitar, you have to have an in between pickups setup. (On a strat, it's the 2nd and the 4th position of the selector) Then turn down the mid, and boost the highs and lows. If you have compression, put some.
You need to play 3 notes chords pretty high on the neck and strum them to sound funky
--------------those are taken from James BROWN...
For Kravitz, dude, he has vintage everything!!
Try a les paul (or humbucker guitar) with a marshall setup on overdrive or distortion but not an extreme one.(what we usually do is put TOO MUCH GAIN)If I remember right, use more mids in this setup. Less Highs. Tweak the bass to see what comes out.

THX, but there are not always 3 note chords, i although heard single note funk lines, like Funky Monks (Peppers) or some Kid Rock songs (e.g. Cowboy) maybe KidRock uses Steal guitars our something like that,
What do u think????
i love that 70 80 s funk and country Rock

yep, they are mostly based around little pentatonic riffs that go round and round.

Relax your picking hand wrist and you might sound a bit more funky.

You might also add some palm muting to your technique.
Lay the fleshy edge of your hand (near the pinky) on the bridge, just on the side away from the pickups. You can reduce the sustain of a note or chord by rolling your hand onto the bridge to mute the strings.
This also gives your picking hand an anchor, so you know exactly where you are, relative to the strings.
Adding a bit of 'chop' to your strumming action can help funkify your sound.
